Michigan-based film company Collective Development has announced that its latest film, Silent Night in Algona, will open in Algona on December 9 at the Fridley Theatre.
After the cast and crew premiere, the film will be screened daily for audiences for at least two weeks, according to an announcement from Collective Development. The film will also open in Owosso, Michigan, the home state of the film company and film director Anthony Hornus.
The world premiere of “Silent Night in Algona” is scheduled for tonight, with many of the people who brought the film to fruition in the area to celebrate. Director Tony Hornus spoke to KLGA's Al Lauck this morning and says finding working vehicles dating back to 1944 was one of the biggest challenges they faced.
While most of the movies depicting actual events in a German POW camp during World War II were filmed in Algona, four days were also filmed at Heritage Park in Forest City from October 31 through last November. 3. Many area residents played small acting roles and appeared as extras in the film. Many others besides Heritage Park offered authentic period items and resources for filming.
Among others, local chiropractic doctor Jim Brockhohn played "Grandpa Joe" in the film. Gary and Barb Ludwig from Forest City donated the use of their Model-T for filming in Whittemore. Jon Hillesland of Leland donated the use of his blue Studebaker pickup truck with handcrafted wood rails that he built.
