Night Shift operates with simplicity. A lonely woman in a huge factory experiences the worst possible first day of work when a robbery occurs. That simplicity allows directors Greg Swinson and Ryan Thiessen to jump right into the emotion, creating a sustained level of suspense and violence throughout. It's an effective and often breathless experience.
Karen (Natalie Terrazzino) begins her first shift as a sprawling factory night janitor with a quick tour of the place courtesy of an abrasive day janitor. That encounter is downright polite compared to a pair of menacing workers making it clear they're siding with Danny (JC Oakley III), the husband to whom Karen served the divorce papers. Then there are the frequent calls from home from her son's apathetic babysitter. Finally left alone for the night, Karen settles into a peaceful routine. But an unexpected arrival begins a brutal and protracted fight for survival.

Swinson and Thiessen, drawing from Swinson's script, make smart choices in the introductions to maximize the thrill of the invasion over a lengthy second and third act. The opening credits play over establishing shots of the set, giving an idea of how big the space is before we even see Karen. The offhand interactions between Karen and her tour guide convey every pertinent detail in a plausible and easily digestible format. Without spelling it out or being too heavy-handed, though some dialogue does get clunky, a cursory first fifteen minutes explains precisely what Karen will be up against and why.
Night Shift isn't interested in creating narrative surprises. Instead, the filmmakers turn their attention to a relentless cat-and-mouse chase between Karen and a handful of towering masked invaders. They intend to trap her inside of her and kill her, but first they will have to trap her. Swinson and Thiessen spend most of their runtime on creative, edge-of-your-seat sequences to drive and maintain the suspense.
Terrazzino struggles in initial introductions, but she quickly adjusts to her role once the action gets going. To avoid detection, Karen must hide, squeeze, climb, crawl and swing through the factory. Being found leads to brutality, bloodshed, and extreme danger. Terrazzino handles the physically demanding part well, but he's not as natural with the dialogue. He is occasionally exacerbated by contrived settings or clumsy decisions meant to advance the plot and the stakes.
Strong direction, excellent use of space, and a brisk pace that delivers plenty of thrills make for a fast-paced and entertaining invasion thriller. The audience may stay one giant step ahead of Karen regarding the motivations of the killers, but it doesn't detract much from the overall painful journey. Night Shift's strength is its simple execution and tension-fueled cat-and-mouse chase in a unique, isolated setting. Those looking for narrative twists or surprises may be disappointed, but if you're in the mood for a lean, mean-spirited thriller that isn't afraid to put its characters through a little pain, Night Shift delivers a solid, biting time.
