On the night of Sunday, May 22, 2011, a devastating EF5 tornado ripped through the city of Joplin, destroying everything in its path. As a result, 161 lives were lost, buildings were leveled, and the entire city was left a sobering pile of rubble. Netflix offers a wealth of intense documentaries on its platform, but perhaps none are as thrilling and impactful as "The Tornado: Caught in the Storm." With surprisingly good tension building to the devastation, along with an emotional conclusion that analyzes the aftermath of the disaster, this is a substantial documentary. And despite being less than 90 minutes long, this documentary is powerful. Director: Alexandra Lacey Writer: Alexandra Lacey The Joplin Tornado is told through raw, firsthand accounts from the people who lived through it. Padre Pio 2022 Movie Review Trailer Cast Crew

The 2022 film Padre Pio is a biographical drama depicting the life of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, a Capuchin friar and mystic who became famous for his stigmata and spiritual gifts. Directed by Giacomo Campiotti and starring Sergio Castellitto as Padre Pio, the film tells the story of the friar's spiritual path, his sufferings and his dedication to God and neighbor.

The film opens with the young Francesco Forgione, the birth name of Padre Pio, growing up in a poor family in the Italian town of Pietrelcina. Despite his humble origins, Francesco shows an early interest in religion and spirituality, and begins to experience mystical visions and prophetic dreams. As he grows older, he becomes a Capuchin friar and takes the name Pio, after Saint Pius V.

Director: Abel Ferrara
Writers: Maurizio Braucci, Abel Ferrara

Stars: Shia LaBeouf, Cristina Chiriac, Marco Leonardi

The film shows Padre Pio's struggle with his physical and emotional pain, which he believes is a way of sharing in the sufferings of Christ. Castellitto's performance is outstanding in portraying the agony of Padre Pio and his spiritual strength. The film also highlights the friar's supernatural gifts, such as his ability to read souls, heal the sick, and levitate during prayer.

One of the film's strengths is its attention to detail in recreating the historical context of Padre Pio's life. The film accurately portrays the political and social upheavals in Italy during the first half of the 20th century, including the rise of fascism, World War II, and post-war reconstruction. The cinematography and music also contribute to creating an immersive atmosphere that transports the viewer to the places and times where Padre Pio lived.

However, the movie also has some weaknesses. The pacing can be slow at times and some scenes feel repetitive or disconnected from the main story. Furthermore, the portrayal of some characters, such as Padre Pio's spiritual director, Padre Agostino, could be more nuanced and less stereotyped.

Overall, Padre Pio is a compelling and inspiring film that portrays the life of a remarkable man who dedicated himself to God and his fellow men. The film does not shy away from showing Padre Pio's weaknesses and doubts, but it also highlights his deep faith and his transformative impact on the people around him. The film is a must-see for anyone interested in spirituality, history, and the human condition.
