Director: Onur Saylak
Writer: Hakan Gunday
Stars: Kivanç Tatlitug, Funda Eryigit, Gürgen Öz

While the premise sounds very generic, the movie takes a rather absurd turn at the beginning. It emulates all the psychological thriller charm of a movie set in a small town. Everyone knows each other, everyone looks out for each other, and outsiders are sure to be skeptical of new arrivals. to push to another height.

Meanwhile, the boredom of watching this movie is already reaching the viewers because there is nothing worse than seeing something moderately well done. If it's terrible, watching hate is fun. If it's great, then you can watch it without restrictions, but the fact that this movie has almost nothing extraordinary about it makes it very difficult to follow. Every moment that builds anticipation ends with climaxes so smooth that the movie never quite picks up the pace.

Within the narrative of the story, relationships are built with such abandon that there is almost nothing attractive about this married couple. They're supposed to be a partnership, which doesn't manifest as the story progresses, even when a sudden change is supposed to change their dynamic. There are so many ways to make these characters good, and they haven't tried at all. The actors are also very good at what they do, but it was like their talents weren't allowed to come out because the script doesn't imply that.

However, kudos to the cinematographer, who had managed to salvage the fragments of this mangled film. The visuals are absolutely stunning, and the lack of sound in some of the shots is great for exploring just how deranged the male lead became as time went on. Overall, Chokehold as a title is also great because the series of events that take place happens because a chokehold lit the fuse. After this, all hell breaks loose and something breaks in the main character.

About whom we know exactly nothing. His wife's character tries to make a definitive statement about her personality in the movie, but there's such a lack of context throughout the movie that it doesn't even make sense when she says it. None of these characters have depth, and their stories lack motivation and detail. Even the ending takes such a dubious turn for the worst in terms of character arc that it ruins everything it built up to at the beginning, continuing halfway through.

There was a lot of potential for this movie to be good, but it was lost in a number of ways, mostly due to the terrible writing. The premise is interesting, the location and aesthetics are great, and the cinematography is absolutely fantastic. Since the writing and story spoil the rest, it becomes hard to root for Chokehold.

This writer would not suggest anyone spend 112 minutes on this movie. It's not well written, well explored, or interesting in the least. He takes himself too seriously and doesn't keep that kind of promise either. Also, the female character is a cardboard cutout that ultimately stays in the movie as a tool to move the story forward, not the person driving a part of it. Even if she wasn't there, she would have been fine.

Furthermore, it also seemed like all the people in this small town are constructed through the lens of someone who has never lived in a small town because the way their ideologies play out in this film is completely devoid of any kind of community focus. and instead focuses on a certain arbitrary cruelty to which these characters indulge. In short, it's better not to watch this movie because it's average in the worst possible sense.
