Still Up 2023 Tv Series Review Trailer

Still Up is a wonderful new series that follows the nighttime adventures of best friends Danny (Craig Roberts) and Lisa (Antonia Thomas). It's entertainment for all the raging insomniacs out there: people with terrible sleep patterns, those who stay up all night and can't find relief in rest.

The premise follows the best friends through late-night phone calls, a new take on the all-too-common friends-to-lovers trope. It is a romantic comedy full of crazy adventures that can only happen in the middle of the night, far from prying eyes, starring extravagant characters that can only be met once in a lifetime and impulsive decisions that can only be made in the dark.

Creators: Steven Burge, Natalie Walter
Stars: Antonia Thomas, Craig Roberts, Blake Harrison

As the series progresses, the friendship between Danny and Lisa deepens into something more, with hints of their romantic compatibility scattered earlier. The script uses jealousy and indifferent boyfriends to further elucidate what Danny and Lisa must be like, and each of their phone calls shows how dependent they have become on each other. It's not a slow burn, but the tension builds steadily throughout the ten installments, so their chemistry doesn't feel like it's coming out of left field. The episodes also have a similar pace to their relationship: a diligent climb full of midnight shenanigans, leading up to the main punchline. From there, they end abruptly, somewhat unresolved, leaving everything for the day to be resolved.

There is something very uplifting about the humor of Still Up. On the one hand, it makes the audience realize how long a night can be, how many of those hours are wasted sleeping, and the abundance of things that can be done in that space. of time. Flashbacks are used for snappy comedic effect and at times the characters are an embarrassing mess which adds even more entertainment; It's amazing to see two people so familiar with each other's idiosyncrasies that they still find a way to fall in love despite it. The rest of the supporting cast is also very endearing in their own right, with Danny's neighbor Adam (Luke Fetherston) being the highlight.

Production-wise, there's a very bottle-like structure to the way it's filmed, with each episode being primarily made up of just two sets: Danny and Lisa's respective current locations. Danny is most often within the confines of his home, while Lisa moves from place to place. Instead, lighting is used to differentiate mood changes in scenes. This gives their relationship more intimacy and implies that, even though people and the environment change around them, the connection between them remains the same.

Still Up marvels at its simplicity and focuses on two people, who go from friendship to love, and the friends and strangers who help them realize it along the way.
