The film follows the journey of Natsume and Kosuke, two sixth graders who get caught up in a strange adventure with their friends. But before you delve into that, lay down the emotional foundation of your characters. We see Natsume waking up in an apartment and wondering what he will do with his free time during the summer vacation. But it seems that she is in a building that has been abandoned for a while. At school, Kosuke is stuck choosing between two options: spend his summer vacation going to Florida with Reina and her family, or go see the abandoned building with her friends Taishi and Yuzuru.

From his conversation with his mother, we learn that he and Natsume had a very close relationship as brothers. But the fact that their old building has been abandoned causes them to grow apart. Now, they are having a hard time reconnecting. As he ends up with Taishi and Yuzuru in the abandoned building, they search for a ghost that they had heard was present there. On their search, they find Natsume sleeping peacefully. They are surprised to see her there; likewise, she is surprised to see them. She explains that she used to come there from time to time and that a friend of hers lives there, named Noppo.

As they follow her looking for him, they reach the terrace and marvel at the impressive sight of her. That's when Reina and her group of friends pass by and see them playing there. As she considers Kosuke (who she had a crush on), she goes there and her friend Juri follows her. Kosuke seems frustrated that Natsume still can't get over the loss of the place they spent their childhood. He also finds her grandfather's camera with her, which adds to her frustration. Seeing an argument between them, Reina thinks that Natsume is picking on him. She continues to fight for him, and in the eventual fight between them, Natsume falls off the building.

As Kosuke tries to help save her by pulling her up, he is unsuccessful. He eventually falls over, but suddenly, something strange happens. They find themselves and the building trapped in a pool of ocean, with nothing else in sight. Being trapped there, they try to look for possible ways to survive. Natsume shows his stockpile of juices and snacks that he had kept for some time. Eventually, they also meet the mysterious Noppo, the ghost. During their conversations, Natsume reveals that this strange thing has happened to him before. But they turned out to be dreams, and she was back in the real world when she woke up afterwards. This particular instance turns out to be different as they are still stuck there.

Soon, they run out of food. That's when Kozuke and Natsume see an apartment building from their childhood floating nearby. They go there to get supplies and find some time to chat and reconnect. Natsume gives the camera to Kosuke and tells him that she and her grandfather, Yasuji, had planned to give it to her for her birthday. That wish was not fulfilled as the grandfather died before they could do so. We also see a scene that separates them emotionally. When they both go to meet the late Yasuji, Kozuke mentions that Natsume shouldn't worry since he's not her grandfather. He hurt his feelings since she always considered them as his family.

Meanwhile, the friends notice a growth of vegetation on Noppo's arm that scares them. He mentions that it has been a part of the apartment since it was created. Later, Kozuke and Natsume see a department store floating in the waters and decide to go inside with Noppo. While touring this store, Natsume finds stuffed toys that take her back to her troubled childhood with fighting parents. Meanwhile, her apartment starts to collide with the store and they decide to return to her base of operations. They see Juri hanging from the building. Natsume decides to help her and then Kozuke does. In a later attempt to save them, Noppo loses his foot.

Later, Natsume mentions her strong emotional bond with Yasuji while he was alive and how her death made her miserable. Her decision to return to her apartment was due to her own feelings towards a place that gave her a sense of home. She also mentions that she at first didn't like the stuffed animal Yasuji gave her, but due to her happy memories of her after her, she now appreciates it very much. Meanwhile, Noppo reveals that she has taken care of both Natsume and Kosuke since they were little children. She also mentions that they weren't supposed to be stuck in the middle of the ocean and that she accidentally transported them all. She suggests they leave, but he himself stays behind. Natsume doesn't like leaving it there.
