After wrapping filming in April of this year, Extraction 2 starring Chris Hemsworth, the follow-up to the high-octane action flick from 2020, now has a release window. The next film will arrive on Netflix in 2023.
Extraction 2 will feature twice as many action sequences as its predecessor, according to a new behind-the-scenes look at the Netflix film.
Released as part of Netflix's Tudum 2022 festivities, the feature film takes viewers inside the making of the Chris Hemsworth-starring action movie. And from what director Sam Hargrave suggests, it sounds like Extraction 2 will actually amplify the action of the Netflix movie that preceded it.
Director: Sam Hargrave
Writer: Joe Russo
Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Golshifteh Farahani, Daniel Bernhardt
Based on the graphic novel City of Ande Parks, Extraction saw Hemsworth play Tyler Rake, a former Australian special forces operative turned mercenary who is tasked with saving a kidnapped crime kingpin's son. While he was able to save the boy, the ending seemed to be the end of Rake's life, although a trailer for last year's TUDUM event made it clear that he was going to fight another day in the sequel.
Along with Hemsworth, the cast of the first film included the likes of Rudhraksh Jaiswal, Randeep Hooda, Golshifteh Farahani, Pankaj Tripathi, and David Harbour, though so far we only know that Hemsworth will return for the next film. In an interview with Collider's Steven Weintraub in late June of this year, the film's writer Joe Russo discussed how different the sequel is from the first film, saying "it has a different color scheme. It's set in a part different from the world "It has a different rhythm, a different tone than the first. And that, to us, is an interesting way to approach serializing a story, is that it's more surprising and unexpected, and you're not going to get exactly the same movie that you got the last time you went out."
While the finer plot details surrounding Extraction 2 are still being kept under wraps, we do know that there are a few names returning to production for the sequel. Once again behind the camera is Sam Hargrave, who made his feature directorial debut with the first film, and Joe Russo will return to write the script. Joe and his brother Anthony Russo will also produce the film through their production company AGBO. Hemsworth will also serve as a producer and will also star in the film.
"With a title of 'two' behind your name, you have to generate at least twice the action," Hargrave boasts during the 80-second sneak peek. The feature film certainly positions Extraction 2 as a step up from the first Extraction movie, with multiple explosions, gunfights, and chase sequences on display throughout.
Interestingly, Hargrave also hinted that Extraction 2 will contain an even better 'oner', aka a seemingly continuous one-take sequence that keeps the audience in the thick of the action for a multi-minute scene. A similar sequence was the main selling point of the first Extraction film. However, as Hargrave says, "For Extraction 2, we're going to take that [close-up] even further with a more intricate and more extreme sequence than before."
The video suggests that such an upgrade could be possible, with a camera crew passing between various crew members during some potentially long and intense action scenes. We'll have to wait for the release of Extraction 2 to see if Hargrave is in the money, though.
Extraction 2 does not yet have a release date on Netflix, but it will arrive sometime in 2023. The epic action film will see Hemsworth reprise his role as black-ops mercenary Tyler Rake from the first film, with Golshifteh Farahani also returning as Rake's mercenary partner. Nick Khan. It's unclear if Rudhraksh Jaiswal will appear as Ovi Mahajan Jr., the son of an Indian crime lord, in the sequel.
