Sony is bringing the spirit of Whitney Houston to theaters. The studio has released the first trailer for “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” a biographical drama about the life and times of the iconic singer.
Star Naomi Ackie has the daunting task of playing the legendary vocal powerhouse in the film, along with a cast that includes Ashton Sanders as Bobby Brown and Stanley Tucci as Cleve Davis. Clarke Peters will play John Houston, Whitney's father, and Tamara Tunie will play Cissy Houston, Whitney's mother.

During the 1980s, Whitney Houston quickly established herself as one of the most iconic voices in pop. Like many megastars, Whitney's career burned bright and bright, before finally crashing and burning. Houston would eventually become involved with fellow singer Bobby Brown. Whitney and Bobby's tumultuous marriage frequently made headlines with allegations of abuse, infidelity, and drug use. After fifty-seven solo singles, Whitney's life was tragically cut short in 2012 at the age of 48 due to an overdose. She was survived by her daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, who was only 18 at the time.
Sony describes "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" as a "no-holds-barred portrait of the complex, multi-faceted woman behind The Voice". The film tells the story of a choir girl from New Jersey who became one of the best-selling and most awarded recording artists of all time. "My dream? Sing what I want to sing, be who I want to be," Houston says of Ackie in the trailer. "Reach the biggest audience I can."
At one point in the clip, Houston is told that a common criticism is that her music "isn't black enough," to which she confidently replies, "Look, I don't know how to sing Black, and I don't know how to sing White." neither. I know how to sing.
Anyone with even the slightest knowledge of Houston's career (her biggest songs include "Greatest Love of All," "I Have Nothing" and, of course, the hit that inspired the movie's title "I Wanna Dance With Somebody ") knows to be true. She became an instant sensation with her self-titled debut album in 1985, which was released on Davis and Arista Records, and ushered in two No. 1 follow-ups with "Whitney" (1987) and "I'm Your Baby." Kasi Lemmons, best known for "Harriet," is directing "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" from a script by "Bohemian Rhapsody" screenwriter Anthony McCarten. Sony has scheduled the film to open in theaters on December 21.
