Jeff Wilbusch stars as a police officer struggling with his faith in the series Peacock which premieres on November 10. The first look at David E. Kelley's investigative drama series "The Calling" was released Monday by Peacock, offering a sneak peek at the show ahead of its Nov. 10 debut on broadcaster.
Emmy-winning executive producer David E. Kelley and Academy Award-winner Barry Levinson star in Peacock's psychological crime thriller "The Calling."
Kelley, most recently known for "Big Little Lies" and "The Undoing," is serving as showrunner, writer and executive producer for the series, which will premiere on the NBCU broadcast on November 10. Levinson is directing several episodes, including the pilot, and is also an executive producer. Hans Zimmer and Steve Mazzaro co-compose this gritty police procedural with a twist.
Stars: Jeff Wilbusch, Juliana Canfield, Karen Robinson
“The Calling” centers on NYPD detective Avraham Avraham, whose belief in humanity is his superpower when it comes to uncovering the truth. Guided by a deep sense of spirituality and religious principles, Avraham must question his very humanity when a seemingly routine investigation is turned upside down. The series is based on the novels of the same name by Dror Mishani, which showrunner Kelley calls a "fascinating and emotionally involved series of books."
Adapted from a series of novels by author Dror Mishani, the show's plot follows a New York Police Department detective named Avraham Avraham (Jeff Wilbusch), who usually relies on spirituality to guide his search for the truth until a investigation makes him reconsider his beliefs.
The series stars Wilbusch, Juliana Canfield, Karen Robinson and Michael Mosley.
One image highlights a particularly tense, if slightly absurd, moment in which Wilbusch shakes hands with a man dressed in a hot dog suit in what appears to be the context of an interrogation.
Behind the production is showrunner, writer and executive producer Kelley, whose long career includes such series as "Picket Fences," "The Practice," "Ally McBeal" and "Big Little Lies." Barry Levinson will also be credited as executive producer and director for multiple episodes.
Hans Zimmer and Steve Mazzaro are collaborating to compose the music for the first season, which will be in the form of eight-hour episodes.
"Avi is a deeply mysterious, spiritual and compelling detective like no other lead she has ever met before," Kelley said in a press release. “[Actor] Jeff Wilbusch takes you into a rich, hypnotic life in front of the camera, and behind the camera Barry Levinson is… Barry Levinson. What a privilege to have him in charge. Add Hans Zimmer to the mix, and the end product is something that we hope will excite, move and instill a little hope in the audience."
Juliana Canfield, Karen Robinson and Michael Mosley also star, along with guest stars including Chris Sullivan, Constance Zimmer, Ben Shenkman, Rafael Cebrián, Danielle Davenport, Noel Fisher, Annabelle Dexter-Jones, Christopher Mann, Steven Pasquale, Stephanie Szostak, Tony Curran, Matthew Del Negro, James Cusati Moyer, and Derrick Delgado.
Co-writers Zimmer and Mazzaro said, "Our goal with 'The Calling' was to write a score that would constantly keep each character suspect. We use a variety of raw, gritty-sounding string instruments alongside pulsing synths, contrasted with a beautifully haunting duduk rendition by our good friend, Pedro Eustache for the character of Avi. We've also manipulated real-world sounds like prison cells and hidden door sounds into our percussion."
The crime drama's executive producers include novelist Mishani, Heather Brewster, Jason Horwitch, Jonathan Shapiro, Matthew Tinker, Peter Traugott and Lisa Roos of Keshet Studios, Alon Shrutzman of Keshet International, Avi Nir of Keshet Media Group, and Karni Ziv of Keshet Broadcasting.
