Matt, a widowed father, struggles to keep his life in order while caring for his five children while working a demanding job. He receives a letter from a lawyer suggesting that his father, in his will, has left him a farm called Mistletoe Farm.
One of Matt's colleagues advises him to take a day here to prepare for his launch on Christmas Eve. The fresh country air and lovely people can take your mind off him. Matt agrees and decides to visit this farm with his children.
Director: Debbie Isitt
Writer: Debbie Isitt
Stars: Scott Garnham, Scott Paige, Kathryn Drysdale
During their time there, the children easily fit in with the townspeople and learn a lot about farming. Matt, on the other hand, just wants to finish his speech and doesn't want to fulfill the duties that have fallen on his shoulders.
The kids, along with the townspeople, who see Matt as the hero who will save the farm from the developers, come together to convince Matt why Mistletoe Farm is much more important than he thinks. Scott Garnham as Matt Cunningham is definitely a convincing father who loves his children more than him, but his acting only works in that area. When it comes to comedy and reacting to a certain situation, his expressions fade.
Scott Paige as Beano is supposed to be the funniest and most beloved character in the movie. What goes wrong for Paige is that he tries too hard to get the jokes out of him, and his overall performance is irritating. The children have done a great job in the small roles they have. His jokes, while not the best, are acceptable for the comedy element to work.
The scenery and locations that viewers can see are captivating. You can't help but imagine living a life at Mistletoe Farm. The adorable nature of the people and their culture is well portrayed. It's good to see that 'Christmas at the Mistletoe Farm' has avoided the usual romantic element found in movies like these, which are meant for family viewing.
There's a bit of romance between Matt and the vet, Ashley, but most of the time it's out of the picture and the main focus is still Mistletoe Farm.
The overall plot isn't exactly bad for a laid back watch. It's the writing that should have been better. The developments in the story are slow, and towards the end, everything seems to be rushed. A lot of the reveals take place in the last 30 minutes of the movie and are pretty predictable as well. Viewers will hardly care about the main character's story when it comes to his father being estranged from him and why he never got close to him.
Also, the message that the film wants to convey becomes confusing. There are some good songs in the film, which are appreciated, but the performances aren't as energetic or uplifting as they should be.
Christmas on Mistletoe Farm is not a good Christmas movie. Despite trying to avoid the usual clichés, the film's story ends up being predictable and its message gets lost somewhere. At the end of the day, the locations alone are worth taking a look at.
