Polish, Rafał Skalski and Marek Baranowski participated in the workshop of Le Goupe Ouest, LIM | Less is More, in 2020 for the development of his feature film, “A night in the kindergarten”.
The Kindergarten Parents' Council meets to rehearse a Christmas play they put on for their children. Unexpectedly, Eryk, who is dating the mother of Tytus, one of the 5-year-old preschoolers, shows up at the meeting, being the only childless participant. During the rehearsal, Eryk discovers a secret plan of the charismatic Justyna, who intends to convince most of the parents to expel Tytus from kindergarten. The council meeting turns into a "court trial" for the mischievous 5-year-old boy. Eryk decides to defend the boy, who doesn't like him. At first, he defends the boy for selfish reasons, but then he destroys the strange web of parental relationships in kindergarten and prepares to become a father. A NIGHT AT KIDS' KINDERGARTEN is Poland in a nutshell, seen through the lens of stressed-out parents and an aspiring stepfather who accidentally walks right into the middle of parenting hell.

The expulsion of the child from kindergarten polarizes attitudes and tests the moral condition of the singular micro-society of the parents' council. For me, A NIGHT IN THE KINDERGARTEN is a metaphor for the “dark night”, the worst nightmare of a Polish parent. The confined situation allows the accumulation of most parenting issues to be exposed during this event.
Following the formula of the black comedy, the film tells a dramatic story of exclusion of an individual who deviates from the imposed norms. I would like viewers to ask themselves: if my son were attacked by a violent preschooler, would he be empathetic enough to the attacker? Eryk uses unconventional methods for parents to find their inner empathic adult. Anyone who strives to be a perfect parent forgets the time when they were children.
Eryk can become a responsible caretaker once he realizes that Tytus is just like the boy he once was. He finally accepts the child that still lives inside of him. You can't be a good parent without liking the kid you used to be.
