Facing the Laughter: Minnie Pearl is a comprehensive documentary on the life and work of Sarah Cannon, also known as Minnie Pearl. Sarah was a serious and educated woman who once dreamed of becoming a Shakespearean actress, but she found fame playing a simple country girl who often became the butt of her jokes. Instantly identifiable, even in silhouette, by her straw hat with a price tag dangling from her brim, Minnie Pearl became an icon of country music radio, stage and television. When she greeted the audience, they enthusiastically repeated her signature "Howdee" with a happy roar. While Sarah and Minnie were two sides of the same coin, they share a legacy of compassion, empowerment, and humor.
It was a dichotomy: Sarah was educated, serious, intelligent, eloquent, ambitious, and untraditional in many ways. Minnie was simple, direct, playful, and quite traditional. A young woman from a small town in Tennessee with big dreams of being a Shakespearean actress on the world stage was more like wishful thinking in the 1930s. But she made it on the world stage, with her recognizable costume and the same line of opening that never got tedious. The legacy she left behind was one of compassion, empowerment, and innovation. But she most of all she made us laugh. This is her story... simple, yet complicated. A permanent fixture in country music, but music was clearly not her gift.
