Idina Menzel: Which Way to the Stage? Movie Review Trailer Cast Crew

The many triumphs of beloved actress and Tony Award-winning singer Idina Menzel include iconic Broadway roles in productions of "Rent" and "Wicked" as well as the legendary voice of Elsa in Disney's "Frozen." However, one dream goal has eluded her: to headline a concert at the world-famous Madison Square Garden in her hometown of New York. Filmmaker Anne McCabe follows Menzel on a 16-show national tour as she juggles the challenges of being a working mother with a grueling travel schedule, all preparing to finally realize her dream.

Our expanding catalog of brilliant celebrity biodocumentaries gets a new entry in "Idina Menzel: Which Way to the Stage?", which follows her subject on a national tour in 2018. In concert, Menzel performed highlights of her career musical, including a mix of show tunes, original pop numbers and songs.

Directors: Anne McCabe, Eric Maldin
Stars: Idina Menzel, Josh Groban, Aaron Lohr

Director Anne McCabe uses these songs as springboards into Menzel's past, and between lengthy performance sequences: renditions of "Take Me or Leave Me" from "Rent," "Defying Gravity" from "Wicked," and "Let It Go". of “Frozen” goes on and on: the film runs through an overview of her professional achievements. We are often reminded that Menzel's tour ends at Madison Square Garden; In an effort to graft an arc onto this timeline, the documentary insists that playing in the sand is Menzel's lifelong dream.

There is little dramatic tension or psychological depth in this cinematic biopic, and even in sentimental moments, McCabe fails to elicit an emotional response from her subject or from the audience. When, for example, the film addresses the sudden death of "Rent" creator Jonathan Larson, McCabe includes an impersonal comment from Menzel, cuts to an archive clip of another cast member, and then continues.

There are bursts of authenticity in the scenes involving Menzel's pre-teenage son, particularly as Menzel explores how going from mom time to work time can bring both guilt and a measure of relief. We already know that Menzel can stick to the back row; a richer profile would have prompted a more intimate voice.
