My Dad The Bounty Hunter is a family animated series that premieres on Netflix on February 9. In this exclusive interview with creators Everett Downing and Patrick Harpin, Mama's Geeky discusses the alien designs, voice cast, and more.

Both worlds collide when his children, Lisa and Sean, sneak onto his ship just as he embarks on a dangerous mission, exposing them to the wonders and dangers of his life.

Creators: Everett Downing Jr., Patrick Harpin
Stars: Kari Wahlgren, Laz Alonso, Jim Rash

A colorful, all-ages response to The Mandalorian, My Dad, the Bounty Hunter is a bright, fun series that strikes a solid balance between family comedy and sci-fi adventure. Ahead of the February 9 premiere of My Dad, The Bounty Hunter, series creators and executive producers Everett Downing Jr. and Patrick Harpin sat down with CBR to talk about their experiences in the animation industry, some of the inspirations that they used for the series. , and the joys of collaborating on the kind of sci-fi show they wanted to see.

Something we immediately noticed was a nod to the Netflix series Maya and the Three. When asked about it, the creators immediately admit that it is there to pay tribute to the writer Jorge R. Gutiérrez, who means a lot to them. “They were kind of surrogate production. He was working on Maya just before doing it with dad and Jorge was really cool with us. And very generous,” says Everett Downing. He also adds that while there aren't really any other nods to Netflix series, there are plenty of sci-fi Easter eggs for viewers to keep an eye out for.

My Dad The Bounty Hunter is a series that families can enjoy together, which was always the plan. Too often, shows that are made for kids are something that parents tune out on. Patrick Harpin admits that he actually resisted hosting a kids' show for a while. “They always make you silly for kids. I remember how he felt when he was a kid and I hated him. When you look at things you're in, they think we're babies. We didn't want to do that."

Adds Harpin: “But with this idea, there are a lot of adult possibilities for the story because he's a bounty hunter and what you can do with that. Netflix really let us go crazy. I'm a little amazed that we got away with it. Because normally, there are so many things on the show that you could never do. We really wanted to make something known that we would see. Like Batman: The Animated Series and shows like that."

The aliens throughout the series are all unique and fun. When asked about the design of them, and if they had something in mind or if they let his team go crazy, Downing confesses that they just let his team do it. “We had this really amazing visual development team. A lot of times you can assign things to only certain people, but we kept it open. They could come from anywhere. And there were some people who were actually coy about it and we were amazing, we're using that."

Harpin adds that this was before The Mandalorian and other things that have come out, and they felt like they were seeing a lot of very serious sci-fi stuff that wasn't fun with desaturated colors and stuff like that. “[We] didn't have the fun '80s. So we made a lot of good decisions, let's do the opposite of what's hot right now. More like the fifth element, which is more playful, like going all out visually. And bright colors. We just tried to do what we weren't seeing a lot of people do right now."
