The Good Mother 2023 Movie Review Trailer

“The Good Mother,” Albany-raised writer-director Miles Joris-Peyrafitte's feature film shows the city in its raw authenticity (and shows how the opioid epidemic destroys lives) and does not neglect the difficulties of the newspaper business, struggling to remain financially viable.

“The Good Mother” will be released on September 1st.

Swank spent five weeks filming in Albany, including multiple days of filming ending after midnight for night scenes. He also rescued a stray dog that had wandered onto the set, which thrilled the 15-year-old dog's owner when they reunited.

In addition to the Times Union, scenes were shot at the Empire State Plaza, the Capitol, the South Pearl coffee shop, the Rensselaer Amtrak station, inside houses on Madison Place and Morris Street, and on a set built inside New Scotland Avenue Armory on the Sage Albany campus.

Joris-Peyrafitte said he wanted to shoot on location in Albany, where the film takes place, because it's so unique that the filmmakers can't "pretend to be in another city."

Vertical acquired the distribution rights to The Good Mother in June 2023. We can confirm that The Good Mother will be released exclusively in US theaters by Vertical on September 1, 2023.

Residents of the UK, Australia and New Zealand can expect to see the film at a later date.

As for where the movie will stream, we think The Good Mother will likely be available on Hulu when the time comes. Hulu is home to a fantastic collection of movies, including the Vertical romantic comedy Maybe I Do, starring Diane Keaton and Emma Roberts, and To Catch a Killer, starring Shailene Woodley. Plans start at $7.99 per month.

A trailer for The Good Mother was released on Vertical's YouTube channel on August 2, 2023. The video opens with a montage of Michael's last moments, in which we see a car chasing him as he flees on foot through deserted streets, eventually being shot. As Marissa rushes to the hospital, Michael can be heard in her last voicemail telling Marissa that there is something important that she needs to tell him in person. 

After Michael's death, Marissa is determined to find those responsible, and her surviving son (a police officer) tells her that while they have a lead, it's not something she should be involved with. However, Marissa's boss at the newspaper tells her that she's the better writer for her, and hints that she should write about the situation. Also, we see Marissa and Paige come to blows at Michael's funeral, where Paige reveals that she is pregnant with Michael's child. The two women begin to trust each other, and Paige's inside knowledge of the world Michael was involved in proves invaluable. Using Marissa's journalistic skills and Paige's firsthand experiences, the two women join forces to investigate the crime-ridden city that took the man they love from them.
