Toya Johnson-Rushing and Reginae Carter are taking control of the narrative with their new reality series. With so much speculation about them on blogs and on social media, Lil Wayne's ex-wife and daughter are setting the record straight by giving viewers a deeper look into their lives on WE TV's “Toya & Reginae,” which will be released on August 1. 24.
"This is a family show based on family drama, business projects, relationships, love, friends and all that good stuff," Johnson-Rushing tells POPSUGAR. The 39-year-old mother of two, who also shares daughter Reign with her husband, Robert Rushing, vows to pull back the curtain and show fans what her real, everyday life is like as she and Carter navigate their relationships and their relationships. busy racing. "I'm sure there are a lot of people who can relate to this, and my family didn't mind being open about it, because we're actually going through it and it's therapy for us as well," Johnson-Rushing says.

As Carter's mother, Johnson-Rushing notes how beautiful it was to watch her daughter evolve both in her relationships and her career during the filming of the series. “Honestly, I love seeing Reginae show her growth this season,” Johnson-Rushing says proudly. “It was great working with her, because Reginae will always be honest and let you know what's going on. I love that about her."
Of course, Johnson-Rushing and Carter are no strangers to reality TV. The mother-daughter duo previously appeared on shows like “Growing Up Hip-Hop: Atlanta,” “Toya: A Family Affair” and “Tiny & Toya,” and Carter is steadily building her acting resume, starring in projects like “Horror Lake Drive”, “Boxed” and “Boxed 2”. So screen-sharing together is within your “comfort zone,” Carter says. “I feel like we can talk to each other and motivate each other. If one [of us] needs advice or whatever, we're always on top of it. She is the perfect partner, she always has my back."
But despite being the daughter of famous parents, Carter, 24, wants to use the show as an opportunity to show the world that she has come this far in her career on her own merit. “When I was a kid, a lot of people would see me on social media and make their own comments about me,” she explains. "[Now] people will see me fight for what I want."
She continues, “When it comes to acting, people think that I get a lot of things because of who I am, [but] they'll see that I'm working for what I want and I want them to know that I'm doing it. get 'us.' It's not perfect here, and I'm human. I want people to know that just because my parents are who they are, I had nothing to do with it."
By opening their lives to the world, Johnson-Rushing and Carter hope viewers get a real sense of who they are beyond the headlines and social media. As of yet, "Toya & Reginae" has yet to be confirmed for a second season, but both Johnson-Rushing and Carter are hopeful.
