In a sign of Spain's growing profile as a primary market for Prime Video, Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, and James Farrell, vice president of international originals at Los Angeles-based Prime Video, flew to Madrid this week, with the world premiere of “Reina Roja”, the series adaptation of the first book of the successful trilogy by Juan Gómez-Jurado, which will take place on Monday night.
The streamer is releasing the record-breaking finale to its first weekly live entertainment show, “Operación Triunfo,” and has revealed that the top three of the top ten most-watched Spanish-language originals of 2023: “Mi culpa,” “Conciencia” and “ Los Farad” – have received on average 80% of streams outside of Spain, reaching a milestone in the international reach of Prime Video's non-English language content.

“The last 12 months have been a truly extraordinary time for Spanish-language content,” said Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios at Prime Video. “[That] not only affects our global audiences, but also critics and voters, having seen Prime Video's 'Argentina, 1985' nominated for an Academy Award and our Mexican original 'La Caída' winning at the International Emmy Awards.
“This year will be even bigger for our Spanish-language films and series, starting with the impressive ‘Red Queen’ coming next,” Salke continued.
Set to premiere on February 29, “Reina Roja” made its world premiere at Madrid's iconic Teatro Fernán Gómez on Monday night with cast members including Victoria Luengo, Hovik Keuchkerian, Àlex Brendemühl, Nacho Fresneda, Celia Freijeiro, the directors Koldo Serra and Julián de Tavira. and Spanish celebrities, including the stars of “Operación Triunfo,” along with Farrell and María José Rodríguez Pérez, director of Spanish Originals at Amazon Studios.
The list of the 10 most viewed original content is headed by “Mi culpa” (“My fault”), which is based on the best-selling book trilogy “Culpables” by Mercedes Ron. Released in June 2023, it became Prime Video's largest non-English language launch in Prime Video history since its launch and ranked among the top ten most-watched titles in over 190 countries, including the US, United Kingdom, Australia, India, Argentina and France. In 2023, almost 90% of the total views of “My fault” came from outside Spain, the film's country of origin. A sequel has been produced under the title “Your Fault” and will soon be released on Prime Video.
Breaking down Prime Video's 10 most-viewed original Spanish-language films and series, it seems scale may matter: Marinao Barroso's "Los Farad," Prime Video's most-viewed Spanish-language series last year, is a deluxe family saga from Large format Thriller that takes place in the context of the arms trade of the 80s in Marbella. “The Head of Joaquín Murrieta,” which begins in California in 1848, a revisionist western where the Mexicans are the good guys and the gringos are the bad guys, is another great work; as is “Zorro,” which is reportedly seeing huge success in viewership numbers in select territory upon Prime Video launch in North America, Latin America and Spain.
That bodes well for “Reina Roja,” which features the stars of two of the most acclaimed Spanish series of recent years, and for other great Prime Video works later in the year.
But if scale can matter, so do other considerations. “My Fault” is a straight-to-the-jugular romantic melodrama for young audiences; The Chilean “Sayen” films are Mapuche action warriors among four titles in the Top 10 that can be described as action thrillers. In other words, Amazon and Prime Video are hitting multiple brands.
