Saipan 2026. A film loosely based on the conflict between the Republic of Ireland coach, Mike McCarthy (Steve Coogan), and his star player, Roy Keane (Eanna Hardwicke), and Keane's subsequent departure from the Irish squad for the World Cup. To begin with, Hardwicke doesn't resemble Keane at all—she's much taller—but she does capture his arrogance. Coogan isn't an exact copy either, but she does capture his seemingly chaotic approach to player management. The highly anticipated premiere of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” took place Monday night at the TCL Chinese Theater in Los Angeles, and initial reactions are already flooding social media.

In this epic kaiju film, audiences finally witness the exciting team-up of Godzilla and Kong as they team up to combat a new global threat.

Filmmaker Adam Wingard returns to the director's chair for “The New Empire,” joined by familiar faces from the MonsterVerse franchise like Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry and Kaylee Hottle. British actor Dan Stevens, known for his collaboration with Wingard in “The Guest” (2014), joins the cast. Additionally, new additions to the ensemble include Fala Chen, Alex Ferns and Rachel House. The script is written by Terry Rossio, Simon Barrett and Jeremy Slater.


“The New Empire” marks the fifth installment in the MonsterVerse series, following “Godzilla” (2014), “Kong: Skull Island” (2017), “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” (2019) and “Godzilla vs. Kong (2021). Notably, the franchise has expanded beyond the big screen with the release of the anime series “Skull Island” (2023) on Netflix and the live-action series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” (2023) on Apple TV+.


While full reviews for “The New Empire” will be released on Thursday, early reactions to the premiere offer a glimpse of the excitement surrounding the film.
