Known as the "father of the atomic bomb," Oppenheimer was director of the Los Alamos Laboratory and led the "Manhattan Project," which first developed nuclear weapons for World War II. He also oversaw the Trinity Test, in which the first atomic bomb was successfully detonated in New Mexico.
Nolan is directing from his own script and producing alongside Emma Thomas and Charles Roven of Atlas Entertainment. The film hits theaters on July 21, 2023. Production took place in New Mexico, California, and New Jersey.
Other cast members include Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Alden Ehrenreich, David Krumholtz, Michael Angarano, and Kenneth Branagh.
This film will undoubtedly be an atypical biopic. In typical Nolan fashion, we expect action, drama, and a touch of sci-fi. Nolan has a tendency to gravitate towards the intangible in his films. Interstellar finds a way to marry the complexities of the space-time continuum with the more concrete theme of space exploration with its highbrow sci-fi premise and script. Inception sees itself as an action movie while also dealing with themes related to metaphysics and the unconscious mind.
At first glance, it may seem that Nolan is simply telling a story through the informed perspective of a historical figure. But a closer examination will acknowledge that nothing is closer to science fiction than the existential power of the atomic bomb, a device capable of literally wiping out all living things.
Aside from a likely masterclass in historical storytelling, there's a lot to look forward to in this film. The cast so far seems to include a handful of talented people like Cillian Murphy, Florence Pugh, Josh Peck, Emily Blunt, Jason Clarke, Robert Downey Jr., David Dastmalchian, and Matt Damon. Nolan has selected an incredibly talented group, some of whom he has had working relationships with in the past. There is no doubt that these people will be able to accurately represent the people the film is based on.
The source material for this film comes from the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Nolan has adapted the book into a screenplay, but because it's based on a biography, it's safe to assume this film will remain in the realm of nonfiction and historically relevant narrative.
