Prime Video's “Paper Girls,” which will premiere on July 29, centers on four 12-year-old girls: Erin (Riley Lai Nelet), Mac (Sofia Rosinsky), Tiffany (Camryn Jones), and KJ (Fina Strazza). who are caught in the crossfire between warring time travelers on Halloween 1988. The quartet of paperboys are transported to 2019 and forced to find their way home, all while facing off against their older self.
Ali Wong plays the adult version of Erin, who helps the tweens escape from the present. Nate Corddry and Adina Porter also star in the ensemble series. Based on the comic book of the same name by writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Cliff Chiang, “Paper Girls” is from Amazon Studios and Legendary Television in association with Plan B. The series is executive produced by Christopher C. Rogers, Stephany Folsom. , Christopher Cantwell, Brian K. Vaughan, Cliff Chiang, Steven Prinz and Plan B. The series was created for television by Folsom. Season 1 is directed by Mairzee Almas, Georgi Banks-Davies, Destiny Ekaragha, and Karen Gaviola. All eight episodes of the sci-fi adventure series premiere July 29 on Prime Video.

Comic book artist Chiang told Entertainment Weekly that having Wong play Erin allowed the comedian to showcase her acting range. "Seeing her do something dramatic and a little bit bittersweet is a really fantastic showcase for her," Chiang explained. “That character is very important to me. Being able to tell a story with an Asian-American character that's not necessarily an immigrant story but a coming-of-age story... I didn't realize how much I needed it until I drew it. The kind of sweet nerd of hers is something I deeply sympathize with ever since I grew up.”
Chiang continued, “Between Erin and Tiffany and K.J. and Mac, there is a great diversity within the group of personalities. I think it's easy to find yourself in one of them, if not all of them. If you've never heard of Paper Girls, if you're not familiar with this comic, then the show is still 100 percent accessible and I think you're going to love it. But if you are a big comic fan, you will still be very surprised. With our blessing, they go some places we never could as comics and there are new characters, there are new threats."
It goes through the nostalgia trip of Stranger Things, the temporal implications of Dark, and the coming-of-age calculations of The Breakfast Club. But it's marred by the languid pacing that modern streaming shows almost demand, where subplots have to squeeze through full episodes before the plot can move forward.
Combine that with lackluster moments of surreal spectacle and a diluted sense of joy, and it's just an effort to top it. Here's hoping they get a second season to right the ship before it goes the way of another recent-vintage Brian K. Vaughan streaming adaptation, Hulu's FX on Y: The Last Man.the sci-fi series is going to air on Amazon prime Video streaming service.
