Nic, battling PTSD after finding her friend murdered, joins her friends for a day of kayaking. While they're having fun, a rogue great white shark (a more aggressive one than usual) starts hunting them and the kids who are playing in the water. After one of them is killed and a child is injured, the women, having landed on an isolated and empty island, must dive back into the water for help. That's the premise of The Reef: Stalked, the sequel to The Reef.
Summer means it's beach time, it also means it's movie time that makes us afraid to go to the beach. A trailer for the upcoming shark attack thriller The Reef: Stalked has been released today. The film is a stand-alone sequel to the 2010 shark attack film The Reef. The Reef: Stalked will be available in theaters, digital, on demand, and will stream on Shudder beginning July 29.

The Reef: Stalked stars Teressa Liane, Ann Truong, Saskia Archer, Kate Lister and Tim Ross. The horror film follows a young woman, Nic (Liane), who goes on vacation to the tropics with some friends in an attempt to recover after witnessing the murder of her sister. During vacation, the friends take a kayak trip across the ocean. Their fun ride soon turns to horror when they find themselves stalked by a great white shark.
Unlike most killer shark movies with terrible CGI, Stalked features live sharks, just like the 2009 original. And for that I'm grateful. As a shark lover, I can't stand to see those fake AF sharks. The movie makes a dazzling, big, beautiful great white shark the villain. I will say this, I don't like seeing sharks turned into villains. They are not murderers, they do not hold grudges and they have no motives. They just are what they are, nature's best eating machines.
The cinematography is great. Stunning views of the ocean are mixed with moments of chaos and drama as the water churns and blood gushes from beneath the waves. The attacks are relatively believable scenes, not exaggerated and full of blood. It's one of the most realistic shark movies I've ever seen, except for a scene with a Kayak giving Jaws a wink.

The tension is well built in the film, writer and director Andrew Traucki takes the time to tell this story. Nothing is rushed or feels forced, and the timing is perfect.
As for the cast, Teressa Liane, who plays Nic, really captures her character's grief, panic and PTSD. The personal drama that develops between her character and those of actresses Ann Truong, Kate Lister and Saskia Archer is a nice addition to the plot, adding depth.
