A melancholy caper film in which an offbeat central trio juggles regret, ambition and manipulation, “Cuba Libre” is a film about the Berlin-Nice-Belgium highway that combines its basic ingredients into one satisfying ride. Festivals in general and women's festivals in particular should take a look at this compact exploration of elastic honor among thieves.
Pic's edgy, depressed humor is immediately apparent when Tina (Catherine Flemming), a drugged-out 30-year-old woman, is recognized by Tom (Richy Muller), a slightly older drifter, at a Berlin train station. Her meeting consists of Tina covering Tom with her bag. Jimmy (Wolfram Berger), an enigmatic wealthy stranger with heart problems, rescues Tom and takes him to a luxury hotel. Tom empties Jimmy's wallet, but this doesn't deter Jimmy from hiring the homeless thief as his personal driver.

It turns out that Tom and Tina had been lovers of hers, but he stole from her and left her in the lurch some five years earlier. He is now scraping the bottom of the barrel and refuses to forgive him. He is wracked with remorse and would like to start over with Tina, but fate and resentments conspire to keep them apart. Meanwhile, there is supposed to be money at the end of the journey with Jimmy.
Part road movie, part identity thriller, part revenge story, the film relies too heavily on its narrative on well-calibrated serendipity, but the viewer's curiosity about the outcome will outweigh most complaints. Thesps maintain a nice undercurrent of interpersonal suspense. Will Tina turn around the man who abandoned her or hug him one more time?
Other characters are almost non-existent in the film, which takes place in cars, hotels, scattered highways and windswept coastlines. The smooth, understated score suits the action, and the technical contributions are fine. The limited series has a total of eight episodes to its credit. The duration of each episode is approximately 52 minutes.
