House of Darkness opens with Hap (Justin Long) and Mina in a car pulling up to a gothic mansion near the woods. It turns out that Hap and Mina had a chance meeting in a bar in the city and the former leaves the latter at home out of the kindness of her heart. No, not really. Hap expects something in return, a casual connection, if you will, but you dress his words in ways that betray his true intentions.

From the start, there is something off about Mina, and the audience picks it up through layered dialogue and visual cues. To begin with, Mina says that she is a creature of the night, and that silence and solitude comfort her, and that hearing/seeing things is part of her everyday existence. At various points in the film, Hap hears strange sounds and shapes both inside and outside the mansion, but rejects the idea due to his over-enthusiasm about sleeping with Mina. There's a huge lack of gender awareness for Hap until the very last minute: he doesn't know what kind of story he's in, as he's blinded by his need to get laid and brag about it to his friends later.

Since Long is the kind of actor viewers will automatically have an affinity with, it's easy to dismiss Hap's covert misogyny as harmless. Sure, he's not a raging jerk in the traditional sense of the term, as he doesn't take advantage of Mina or the fact that she supposedly lives alone. But, he's a clumsy jerk whose words slur as he gets drunk, revealing the not-so-noble intentions he's so desperate to hide. Mina expertly calls her pretentious, and what follows is witty banter between the two.

Just as the two are about to begin, they are interrupted by Lucy (Gia Crovatin), who turns out to be Mina's sister. At this point, horror-savvy audiences will understand exactly what's going on. The sisters are allusions to Mina Harker and Lucy Westenra in Bram Stroker's "Dracula," which immediately brings up the veiled vampiric aspects of House of Darkness. However, Hap has no idea, as his mind jumps to a threesome with the sisters, which he thinks is soft enough to make it happen.

After Lucy walks in and meets the two, Hap apologizes profusely and is taken aback by Lucy's presence. Mina reveals that she is her sister and that she did not know that Lucy would be present tonight. Any self-aware human being would immediately question everything that has happened so far: the flickering lights of the mansion, the sights and sounds Hap hears, Mina's veiled dialogue, and Lucy's sudden and eerie presence. no hap When the sisters ask him to stay for another drink, he says he does and waits in the living room until they return.

Meanwhile, Hap is extremely drunk. He looks at Mina's half-drunk glass of extremely old wine and drinks it with relish. What follows is a nightmare that is more of a premonition than a mere dream: he sees that he is tied up inside a cave filled with men's shoes, where Mina is seen wandering ominously around the area. He wakes with a start, clearly shaken, but soon dismisses it as a strange nightmare.

As Hap drank from Mina's cup, which contained really old wine, he accessed the reality of his situation in the form of a dream. Mina, who is a former vampire, spends her nights hunting men and luring them inside the mansion under the pretext of a possible sexual relationship. However, she is not the victim, but an apex predator: she plays with her food, ties them up in caves whenever she feels like it, and slowly kills them. Hap gets a warning, so to speak, but chooses to ignore her intuition entirely. After all, dudebros who brag about her sexual conquests with women and see them as "body counts" rarely exercise her intuition. Needless to say, Hap pays the price.

Towards the end, Lucy tells a foreboding story of a girl who was raped by a group of men, who left her bruised and nearly dead in the woods. The girl was taken in by a family of vampires, which included two sisters, and they took care of her until she regained her health (they turned her into one of their own). The three sisters, immortal creatures of the night, then tear the perpetrators to shreds, leading to an eons-spanning cycle of revenge against men who prey on women in one way or another.

Although Hap listens to the story, he still has no idea of her fate. He muses, "Well, I'm lucky there's only two of you," which is when the third sister Nora (played by Lucy Walters) introduces herself. At this point, the danger Hap is in is all too obvious, and he refuses to believe the truth that is so obvious. Calling the women demeaning names and threatening to physically harm them, Hap tries to get out of it.
