All's Fair 2025 Tv Series Review Trailer

This review contains plot details from the first three episodes of “All’s Fair,” which are now available on Hulu. Creators: Jon Robin Baitz, Joe Baken, Ryan Murphy Stars: Kim Kardashian, Naomi Watts, Niecy Nash The fact that a legal drama supposedly about female empowerment begins with a pilot episode written and directed by men probably tells you everything you need to know about “All’s Fair.” In fact, of the three episodes currently available on Hulu to commemorate the series premiere, only one features a significant creative credit from a woman, and it’s shared between executive producer Jamie Pachino and co-creator Ryan Murphy, who collaborated on the script for Episode 2.  But this is a review, so I’m obligated to elaborate: “All’s Fair” is a clumsy, condescending take on superficial, triumphalist feminism, undercooked even by the standards of the overworked Murphy, who co-created the series with Joe Baken and Jon Robin Baitz. Admittedly, the tone is intentionally campy, and i...

Wild Cards 2024 Tv Series Review Trailer

The consulting procedural, a subgenre that is sorely missed in the television landscape, has made a welcome return with The CW's latest series, Wild Cards. From Richard Castle to Lucifer Morningstar, TV's most entertaining detectives have often been unconventional partners with by-the-book cops rather than traditional detectives.

Wild Cards, starring Riverdale's Vanessa Morgan and Grey's Anatomy's Giacomo Gianniotti, introduces us to the collaborative efforts of Max, a thief with a penchant for breaking the rules, and Ellis, a demoted detective eager for his reinstatement.

Despite not reaching the heights of its predecessors, Wild Cards offers an enjoyable experience, buoyed by the palpable chemistry between its charismatic leads. Borrowing elements from the likes of Psych's Shawn Spencer and White Collar's Neal Caffrey, Max is an outgoing, brash thief with a refreshing twist: the woman of the duo plays the role of an unconventional outsider. Unlike the typical strict officer of the genre, Max's bold, rule-breaking approach injects joy into the central female character, forcing her strict male companion to relax.

Vanessa Morgan's standout performance as Max brings bravery, humor and charm to the series, overshadowing the occasional awkwardness in the dialogue. While Wild Cards may not match the intelligence and fluidity of its inspirations, it shows potential, leaning into predictable beats with self-awareness and admiration for procedural conventions. Instead of focusing on serious investigations, the series prioritizes visualization and an enjoyable viewing experience.

However, Wild Cards struggles with occasional cringeworthy attempts at dialogue to connect with younger audiences, which falls short compared to the wit of shows like Psych and Castle. Despite this weakness, the series offers a fun, weightless experience, particularly for those who crave the upbeat, easy-to-watch shows from networks like USA and The CW. While not groundbreaking, Wild Cards has the potential to run for seasons, building on its formula and improving over time. It may not win awards or praise for its innovative storytelling, but it stands as a series with the potential to endure and evolve, giving viewers an enjoyable escape.
