Searchlight Pictures has pulled back the curtain on "See How They Run," the production company's upcoming murder mystery starring a detective duo played by Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan. The film opens in theaters on September 30.
The first footage introduces viewers to Rockwell's experienced Inspector Stoppard and Ronan's rookie Constable Stalker. The pair team up to solve the most disgusting murder in London's West End theater district during the 1950s, investigating the seedy underbelly of England's glamorous entertainers and revealing a litany of creative and hot-headed suspects.

David Oyelowo, Adrien Brody and Ruth Wilson also appear in prominent roles alongside Rockwell and Ronan. Harris Dickinson, Sian Clifford, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, Shirley Henderson, Reece Shearsmith, Paul Chahidi, Pearl Chanda, Charlie Cooper and Pippa Bennett-Warner round out the film's host of supporting talent.
“See How They Run” is directed by Tom George, who recently directed all 19 episodes of the British sitcom “This Country.” The original screenplay was written by Mark Chappell, with Damian Jones and Gina Carter producing. Searchlight first revealed the official title and full cast of “See How They Run” last July.
“This incredible cast has been an absolute dream,” George said in a statement last summer. “I am so excited to bring this exciting, smart and funny murder mystery to the public. Doing it with the company behind such brilliant films as 'Jojo Rabbit', 'Birdman' and 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' has really been a perfect fit."
Although See How They Run is not an adaptation, the trailers and press releases shed light on the film's characters, some of whom are based on real people. Therefore, we have created a list of summaries that briefly describe most of the characters in Look How They Run:
Sam Rockwell stars as Inspector Stoppard, a veteran detective whose keen intellect is put to the test in this case.
Saoirse Ronan stars as Constable Stalker, an amateur sleuth so determined that she often makes irrational decisions like kicking down a door, even when the key is nearby.
Adrien Brody plays Leo Köpernick, the play's immoral director who may have made some enemies within his team. Since Köpernick is the first casualty according to the trailers, Brody's screen time will most likely be relegated to flashbacks. Ruth Wilson plays Petula Spencer, a British stage manager who would rather be an actress.
Reece Shearsmith plays John Woolf, a well-known film producer who wants to adapt this play into a movie. In real life, Woolf was involved in the making of many 1950s and 1960s films, including The African Queen and Oliver!, for which he won an Oscar.
Harris Dickinson plays Richard Attenborough, a real-life actor who plays Detective Sergeant Trotter in the game-within-the-movie, which is actually called The Mousetrap. Although Attenborough appeared in movies before then, he went on to star in several classic films, including The Great Escape and Jurassic Park. Attenborough would also win two Oscars for directing and producing Gandhi in 1983. This iconic Renaissance man didn't die until 2014, but See How They Run is fictional, so he might end up being killed off in the movie after all.
