9-1-1 returned this Monday with Season 6, and while seasons always start and end with bumps, it really felt more like a return to form. This premiere was really more of a check-in with our characters, seeing where we are with regards to relationships and personal journeys. Though that doesn't mean we were robbed of the wild calls this show is known for. There's a blimp crashing into a stadium, a man gets shot by a wedding ring, and two people get new cars thanks to dehydration and exposure.
Once again, the team is working together like a well-oiled machine, and it's great to see Chim (Kenneth Choi) and Eddie back on the team. What's surprising is that Arielle Kebbel's Lucy Donato already appears to be off the team. Although Lucy said that she is injured, this feels like a big step back on the show after acknowledging some fans' distaste for the character. While some may find her a welcome addition, the show has a lot of characters and a lot of relationships that it would be better to focus on, so not seeing her until the middle of the season is fine.
Creators: Brad Falchuk, Tim Minear, Ryan Murphy
Stars: Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Oliver Stark
The premiere offered new storylines for the season, but also revisited some of the fan-favorite relationships. We finally get to see Buck (Oliver Stark), Eddie and Christopher hanging out together on screen again. The trio is often a small dose of sweetness in an episode and the scenes offer insight into the characters of Buck and Eddie. Of course, last season we saw that Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Chim were on the rocks. After battling postpartum depression, Maddie ran away and they eventually broke up. But it looks like things are looking up for the two as they reconcile their relationship and raise baby Jee-Yun together.
May heads off to college, while Bobby (Peter Krause) and Athena (Angela Bassett) embark on a cruise. New characters are being introduced to the call center. The 118th is getting an interim captain while Bobby enjoys the high seas with Athena. The season feels primed for drama. With Hen (Aisha Hinds) getting promoted to interim captain and Buck not, it's clear we'll see a lot more of Hen's development this season, as well as Buck's maturity. At the very least, he ended the episode with a couch.
Of course, the show wouldn't be complete without a shocking ending. Before Bobby and Athena go on vacation, they are video chatting with Athena's parents only for a shocking accident to leave us wondering what happened and if they are dead or alive. Does this mean there is no cruise for Bobby and Athena? Time will tell.
Season 6 is already like a big step up from Season 5, which felt disjointed at times. The team disbanded, Buck was in this horrible relationship with Taylor, and the show often felt like it was living in the shadow of its own spin-off: 9-1-1: Lone Star. Maybe this means good things for us, lovers of the original gang, and we will see that the 118 tackle problems head-on as a group instead of separately.
