The Curse of Bridge Hollow takes Marlon Wayans out of horror skits and into a family-friendly adventure with creatures that look really creepy.
Netflix recently released the trailer for The Curse of Bridge Hollow, a Halloween family comedy that stars Marlon Wayans as a father who moves his family from Brooklyn to a small town with a spooky backstory. Of course, it's not long before Wayans' character and his family have to stop a legitimate supernatural threat that conjures up zombies, evil clowns, and even a giant spider. While this is normal for fans of movies like Goosebumps and Hocus Pocus, it's something completely new for Wayans.
In the past, Wayans has acted in and co-wrote raunchy skits that take pictures of horror movies like Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer and even Paranormal Activity. The Curse of Bridge Hollow represents a starting point for Wayans, as it will be the first film in his career that seems legitimately designed to make the viewer's hair stand on end. It also represents an important milestone in the actor's film career as he takes on a more mature role.
The Curse of Bridge Hollow will never be mistaken for a truly scary movie like The Conjuring universe movies as it is specifically aimed at younger viewers and their families. However, it also appears to have been made to give them fun, gentle scares with ghosts and legitimately scary creatures, which Wayans' Scary Movie and A Haunted House didn't have. The curse of Bridge Hollow may not give them nightmares, but it will make them fear their villains.
Director: Jeff Wadlow
Writers: Todd Berger, Robert Rugan, John R. Morey
Stars: Nia Vardalos, Lauren Lapkus, Priah Ferguson
It also probably helps that The Curse of Bridge Hollow has a veteran horror director behind the camera: Jeff Wadlow. His filmography includes the horror films Cry Wolf, Truth or Dare, and Fantasy Island. Judging from The Curse of Bridge Hollow trailer, Wadlow brings thrills and intensity that are designed to keep viewers on the edge of their chairs, something Wayans' horror parodies didn't either, as they focused on making viewers laugh. people.
The Curse of Bridge Hollow is also a starting point for Wayans, as he shows him playing a different character than usual: a nerdy dad/science teacher. Typically, Wayans is known for his most over-the-top comedic performances in movies like Fifty Shades of Black, which spoofed Fifty Shades of Grey. Now that he's 50, the comic dynamo may have been looking to showcase his range in a more mature, subdued role with more familiar material.
However, the new movie still seems to allow Wayans to show off his comedic chops in scenes of him with his creatures or his eccentric human characters, played by Rob Riggle and John Michael Higgins. It even gives Wayans a pretty cool moment where he can tell a fact about the chainsaw, before effectively using it on a skeleton. If successful, The Curse of Bridge Hollow could lead to a franchise in which Wayans continues to tackle the creepy and terrifying, or more films in which he shows off more of his acting chops.
Watch Marlon Wayans hack his way through skeletons when The Curse of Bridge Hollow hits Netflix on October 14.
