20th Century Studios has just released a new preview image for its upcoming supernatural teen comedy Darby and the Dead, along with the announcement that the film will premiere on December 2, 2022 on Hulu in the United States. The film will premiere on Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ under the Star brand in all other territories around the world.
Darby and the Dead will tell the story of a high school student who also passes into the moonlight as a spiritual messenger. Darby's supernatural gift comes after a near-death experience when she was a child. After her experience, Darby discovers that she can see the dead. As a result of her new ability, she becomes completely withdrawn and withdraws from her high school classmates. Instead, she prefers to spend her time talking to the spirits who come to her for help. But everything changes when Capri (Auli'i Cravalho), the most popular girl in school, dies in a freak accident while straightening her hair. Capri's ghost soon begins to haunt Darby in hopes that she will convince Capri's friends to throw her seventeenth birthday party. Darby will have to break out of her shell and reinvent himself in the process.

20th Century Studios + Hulu have revealed an official trailer for a teen comedy titled Darby and the Dead, directed by Silas Howard. This skips theaters and is coming straight to Hulu in December for anyone at home to watch. This sounds like The Sixth Sense, but if it were a high school comedy from a teenage girl. After suffering a near-death experience as a child, Darby Harper gains the ability to see dead people. As a result, she becomes introverted, preferring to spend her time mentoring lonely spirits who have unfinished business on earth. But all that changes when Capri, the "queen bee" of the school's most exclusive gang, unexpectedly dies in a freak accident while straightening her hair. What a twist! Darby and the Dead stars Riele Downs, Auli'i Cravalho, Chosen Jacobs, Asher Angel, Wayne Knight, with Derek Luke and Tony Danza. This is a very lackluster direct-to-streaming release, borrowing from To All the Boys I've Loved Before or Mean Girls more than anything else with ghosts.
The new image, released today, shows Darby and Capri walking down the crowded hallway of their high school. Capri, dead but used to the attention, walks confidently, while Darby still seems uncertain. The image gives us an idea of both the disparity between the two characters and the potentially crossover arc of their travels. Maybe Capri will help Darby feel comfortable shining in the spotlight. And maybe Darby can help humble the reigning queen bee.
Darby and the Dead is directed by Silas Howard. In addition to Downs and Cravalho, the film also stars Chosen Jacobs, Asher Angel, Wayne Knight, Derek Luke, and the legendary Tony Danza. The film's script was written by Becca Greene, who previously worked on Good Vibes. It is based on a story by Wenonah Wilms, who previously worked on Fem 101. The film is produced by Adam Saunders, Eddie Rubin. Michele Weisler and Mac Hendrickson are the executive producers of the film.
