Netflix has announced Dragon Age: Absolution, a new animated series based on the RPG series coming to the streaming service later this year.
Details about the show are scant for now, but Netflix says it will run for six episodes. The story is "set in Tevinter" and "introduces a host of new characters inspired by and authentic to Dragon Age lore; including elves, wizards, knights, Qunari, red templar, demons, and other special surprises."
Dragon Age: Absolution, one is that it will be set in Tevinter, a country we've heard a lot about but seen very little about. We've certainly heard a lot about Tevinter throughout the series' history, particularly their unwillingness to follow in the footsteps of the other nations that make up the continent of Thedas.
Stars: Matthew Mercer, Ashly Burch, Phil LaMarr
Where other countries have outlawed slavery, in Tevinter, enslaved people are omnipresent. While other countries have long ago signed peace treaties with the Qunari invaders to prevent further bloodshed, Tevinter still wages war against them. And most notably, while other countries have vilified magic and locked wizards in towers, Tevinter embraces the arcane arts in all aspects of daily life. While it's an empire clinging to its faded glory days, it still has a reputation as a formidable force and is one of the most intriguing countries in Dragon Age based on mystique alone.
The show is being produced by Red Dog Culture House, a South Korean animation studio that previously worked with Netflix on The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf and the Love, Death & Robots episode Good Hunting.
According to the description of the new trailer on YouTube, Dragon Age: Absolution promises new characters “inspired by and authentic to Dragon Age lore; including elves, wizards, knights, Qunari, red templars, demons, and other special surprises.” We see for ourselves a Qunari magician in action, commanding fire. Whoever he is, we can assume that he is Tal-Vashoth, which means that he has cast aside the strict lifestyle of other members of his race. Traditional Qunari have been known to horribly bind and mutilate mages in an attempt to control them, and this particular Qunari seems very free.
Along with the qunari, we also get quick shots of who we can guess will be our new set of leads. We're shown what looks like a traditional lineup of mages, rogues, and warriors. Most of them appear to be human, although there may be a dwarf among them. We'll have to wait for more trailers or screenshots from Netflix to confirm.
We also get a featured elf in the trailer, who gives off the tough look of the typical fantasy rogue. We don't have names or personalities for these characters yet, but whoever they are, they all seem battle-hardened and ready to fight, which means they'll fit right into the world of Thedas.
