Lionsgate released the official trailer for Mindcage, a new crime thriller about two detectives on the hunt for a copycat serial killer. Focusing on the star-studded trio of Martin Lawrence, Melissa Roxburgh, and Academy Award nominee John Malkovich, the trailer showcases their reluctant partnership to prevent the killer from claiming more victims for his haunting artistry. Along the way, the case becomes deeply personal for both detectives as they find themselves caught up in the web of the copycat and the original killer.
The trailer starts on a twisted note when a priest notices a strange angel statue in his church that turns out to be the latest twisted piece of a serial killer. When Jake Doyle (Lawrence) sees the angel, he is immediately haunted by a past case involving the Artist (Malkovich), a brilliant but deranged killer who turned his victims into his exhibits. Jake helped put him behind bars for good, but now he's forced to deal with his worst fear: a copycat. To root out the killer, he teams up with Detective Mary Kelly (Roxburgh) and the two meet with the original killer to get some sort of lead. However, before they can begin, Jake reveals that the case is more personal than he originally let on, as The Artist also killed his previous partner.
Despite Jake's desire that The Artist pay for his crimes, Mary can't get anything out of the killer without making a deal to commute his death sentence. Even once they comply with her demands, she only provides questionable help. Her madness is on full display as she speaks in riddles and religious imagery about his and the copycat's "art." He eventually turns this game of cat and mouse into a race against time when he deduces that Mary is the copycat's next victim. When the detectives discover that her entire life spans the walls of the killer, the unsettling reality sets in and sets off a tense race to stop the psychopath and save Mary's life.
Mindcage marks only Lawrence's third role since 2015. He's been out of Hollywood's inner circle for some time now, most recently returning to the big screen with 2020's Bad Boys for Life. It's a bit of an unusual turn for the best-known comedian. . for making audiences laugh with the Bad Boys franchise, Big Mama's House and Martin, but with Manifest's Roxburgh and In the Line of Fire's Malkovich at his side, he'll get a chance to flex his dramatic muscles.
Mauro Borrelli directs the film from a script written by frequent collaborator Reggie Keyohara III. Together, the two have co-written several films, most recently WarHunt, starring Rober Knepper and Mickey Rourke, as well as The Recall with Wesley Snipes in 2017. On his own, Borrelli has contributed sporadically to the art department on several of the projects. from Disney.
