Noah Centineo has officially gone from high school hunk to CIA spy. The history of film and television with police dramas and spy thrillers is patchy, to say the least, with many of the genre's 21st century outings releasing to mixed reviews both publicly and critically. Despite this, detective-based thrillers have an almost unbreakable link to screen culture, dating back to the early Hollywood noir adventures that set the precedent for many films to come. In 1941, John Huston released the now legendary The Maltese Falcon, considered the first great film noir. This film demonstrated how successful the genre could be, all on a small budget, which made it particularly attractive to producers and executives. However, the history of the crime thriller is more fondly remembered than it seems to be received today, making it one of the more difficult genres to break into with critical acclaim. Network procedures like S.W.A.T. have become the norm within the genre in recent years, though shows like The Killing and movies like the Bourne series are showing what can be done technically to bring back some of the crime genre's early hits.

One such show that aims to bring critical acclaim to the genre is The Recruit. Having impressed conceptually even before it was titled, the production companies fought fiercely in April 2021 in an attempt to acquire the rights. Netflix won this battle, soon naming it The Recruit and fixing it as one of the leading lights of the crime genre as we approach the end of 2022.

Creator: Alexi Hawley
Stars: Noah Centineo, Katharine King So, Victor Andres Turgeon-Trelles

During Netflix's Tudum fan event on Saturday, the former “To All the Boys” star revealed that his upcoming spy series is titled “The Recruit” and will premiere December 16 on the streamer. He also shared the first photo from the show, which shows him looking down at something (a villain, maybe?) from behind a door with a cut across his cheek.

According to its tagline, "The Recruit" centers on "a rookie CIA lawyer who finds herself embroiled in dangerous international power politics when a former asset threatens to expose the nature of her long-term relationship with the agency unless she is told." exonerated from a charge. Serious felony."

The eight-episode series comes from creator, showrunner and executive producer Alexi Hawley, whose previous work includes "Castle," "The Following" and "The Rookie." Entertainment One and Hypnotic are also producing. Centineo executive produces alongside Hawley, Hypnotic's Doug Liman, P3 Media's Gene Klein and David Bartis, Adam Ciralsky and Charlie Ebersol.

In November, it was announced that the show had added seven series regulars and four guest stars. Series regulars are Daniel Quincy Annoh, who plays Terence; Kristian Bruun, who plays Janus Ferber; Colton Dun, who plays Lester; Laura Haddock, who plays Max; Vondie Curtis-Hall, who plays Walter Nyland; and Aarti Mann, who plays Violet. Guest stars include Byron Mann, who plays Xander; Angel Parker, who plays Dawn; Linus Roache, who plays Senator Smoot; and Kaylah Zander, who plays Amelia. Character descriptions have not yet been released.

A common theme found in most of Netflix's most successful series is a strong cast that wins the audience's sympathy. This will apparently be no different when The Recruit finally airs. As mentioned above, the show is headlined by Noah Centineo (The Perfect Date). Noah is having a great 2022, also playing the Atom Smasher in the recently released DC Comics blockbuster Black Adam, starring opposite Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Of course though a brilliant performer, by his own account Centineo, wouldn't be able to bring this show to life and thankfully the rest of the cast is just as strong. Also starring in the series are Laura Haddock as Max, Aarti Mann (Never Have I Ever) as Violet, Daniel Quincy Annoh (Americanah) as Terence and Vondie Curtis Hall (Harriet) as Walter Nyland. The cast list doesn't end there, with a plethora of acting talent taking part in what's shaping up to be one of Netflix's most must-see shows of December.
