There's no joke too obvious for Diane, aka "Chicago's Party Aunt," to pull off with a whoop and a loud wink. In the Netflix animated show adapted from Chris Witaske's Twitter account, Diane (Lauren Ash) is as loud, rude and unapologetic as the tweets that inspired her. The closest she gets to showing another layer is her general annoyance with gentrification as she continues to take over her favorite Chicago hangouts. Otherwise, she's happy to party, give bad advice to her beloved nephew Daniel (Rory O'Malley) and defend her filthy lifestyle to her death. They eat Chicago food, have wacky misadventures, flirt with learning a life lesson, wash up, rinse, repeat. If anyone can count on Diane for anything, it's for finding the crudest, most unavoidable joke for any situation. By the time she and Daniel arrive at a barbecue ribs food festival, you can practically utter her many lewd lines about "backstage" along with her.
As Ash warmly puts it, fresh off a distinguished career as an exceptionally bossy manager at "Superstore," Diane is a cheerful agent of chaos with little regard for consequence. Ash embraces her flat-vowel Chicago accent so tightly that she often leans into general Midwestern territory, but there's no question that she also embodies the crazy energy level the character demands. The problem with the show surrounding Diane, though, is that it barely exists. O'Malley's (relatively) more timid Daniel anchors most of the other stories, which Diane inevitably squashes. Her mother, Bonnie (Jill Talley), Diane's sister, has spent her life cleaning up Diane's messes, but the moments in which she allows herself to be so messy are some of the most memorable on the show. Meanwhile, blacks somehow barely exist in this version of Chicago outside of Gideon (RuPaul Charles), Diane's snobbish boss at the hair salon where she inexplicably works, and woefully underused Da'Vine Joy Randolph as her understandably overmatched co-worker. .

If you're someone who grew up in the same Chicago as Diane and Daniel, perhaps "Chicago Party Aunt" appeals to your instinctive "hey, I know that place!" susceptibility. If not, there are plenty of other cartoon shows that might give you one more reason to root for them, even if they only provide the slightest hint of a twist on the most anticipated jokes they might pull.
“Chicago Party Aunt” premieres Friday, September 17 on Netflix.
