Jim Miller is the father of Laura Miller, one of the women whose remains were found in the field. To this day, he is determined to help people find missing women, whose cases are not being handled by the police. One of the features of the cases of Laura and Heidie Fye, whose bodies were found in the field (a third was still a Jane Doe), was that police told their loved ones that both women had run away, delaying the case. discovery of their bodies. for months or even years. Miller believes that inaction by law enforcement allowed elements to take critical evidence.
The episode then takes up the case of Ellen Beason, who disappeared in 1984. A man named Clyde Hedrick was arrested after her body was found; he claimed she drowned and dumped her body in a field not far from Calder Road. But with the level of decomposition, there wasn't much physical evidence to link him to the remains, so he was convicted on the charge of mishandling a corpse, which only carried a one-year prison sentence. Could the Beason case be related to the Calder Road cases?
Stars: Skip Hollandsworth, Lise Olsen, Kathryn Casey
One of the fascinating aspects of Crime Scene: The Texas Killing Fields is that it's in no rush to explain the resolution to the mystery of why these bodies turned up in the Calder Road field, with three of them found months apart. In fact, two of them, Jane Doe and Laura Miller, were found on the same day. Given the rural location, the idea that all these bodies would be dumped here in such a short time generated national attention. But the focus of the docuseries, at least from the first episode, is the conditions that make the field a place where these bodies could be dumped.
An isolated field in a rural area. Weather conditions, such as storms, humidity, and heat, that accelerate decomposition and destroy physical evidence. These are all factors that explain why the killers use fields like that and the area where the bodies of a group of women were found in the 1970s. Dimmock doesn't say they're all linked to the same killer at the end of the first episode, but he doesn't say either. says they are not.
It's a bit of a novel approach, even as the rest of the episode plays out like a pretty standard Netflix true crime series. However, it's refreshingly devoid of re-enactments, relying more on scenes of the likes of Ted Miller looking at the marks left where his loved ones were found and archival news footage. It's always welcome when there's little to no reenactment on a show like this.
