Doom Patrol 2022 Tv Series Season 4 Review Trailer Cast Crew

Beyond its two-episode season premiere, Doom Patrol Season 4 gets even more imaginative and wacky with the third episode of the season, titled "Nostalgia Patrol." While the action is light, the episode reaffirms the misfit team's commitment to each other, featuring an underlying theme of friendship alongside the reality-shifting adventure the series pulls off so well. While still a bit more contemplative than the wildly raucous antics of past seasons, "Nostalgia Patrol" makes Doom Patrol season 4 fit more into a mainstream place as the story and its main antagonists begin to take shape in the season narrative.

After being kicked out as team leader, Rita Farr decides to visit a local film festival to honor her acting career, only to discover that it's all an elaborate trap designed specifically to entrap her. The rest of the team rushes into action to rescue her friend from certain harm, following her into a world where they and Rita are trapped in Rita's classic Hollywood filmography with the most sinister stakes. Meanwhile, Vic Stone continues to acclimate to life with his restored organic body, contacting his high school friends to reconnect, only to discover that his old life is far from how he left it before he became a Cyborg.

Creator: Jeremy Carver
Stars: Diane Guerrero, April Bowlby, Matt Bomer

In the age of the movie superhero, we are inundated with a variety of fascinating characters who are endowed with unimaginable powers that overcome the most unlikely odds to save the world. It can all start to feel very repetitive. There is one team, however, that can never be accused of being lumped in with the rest of them early on, they placed their marker on the ground, proclaiming that everything would be different and incredibly weird. Welcome back to Doom Patrol Season 4, coming to HBO Max weekly starting December 8.

Developed by Jeremy Carver, Doom Patrol tells the story of a dysfunctional group of metahumans who were tested by a mad scientist in search of immortality. A less than ideal team, the Doom Patrol take on the strangest villains and strangest obstacles to exist in the DC universe. Season 3 saw the team tested like never before as they tried to function without the direction of the Boss (Timothy Dalton) while taking on the Brotherhood of Evil, the Brotherhood of Dada, and some zombies. If you've never seen Doom Patrol, then the latter reference may seem strange to you, but it's literally what it sounds like.

Now, in Season 4, the team must face off against one of their biggest villains yet, Immortus. He comes for the team's immortal genetics so that he can rise up once more and take revenge on all who stood against him.

I have had the pleasure of watching six episodes of Doom Patrol Season 4 and have been a huge fan of the series for the past few years. The show has always done a great job of providing a storytelling space for other characters and allowing them to act in a variety of roles. One of my favorite characters in particular is Danny, the non-binary magical sensitive street who provides a safe haven for members of the LGBTQIA community, resulting in some spectacular storylines. On top of that, the show also pushes some very weird storytelling boundaries fusing together some newer concepts while still honoring the source material, which itself was way out there. Doom Patrol is unabashedly and inherently weird, and has every aspect of it.

With that being said, Season 4 begins to feel like the show is running out of gas on what it conceptually wants to achieve. From seasons one through three, the progression has felt as natural as it could get, but the current narrative simply lacks that particularly exciting nuance of supernatural and unnatural plot points it's known for. There's a chance the remaining four episodes will piece together some of the groundwork to create something pretty explosive. But in the landscape of weekly episodes and the constant clash of streaming shows and movies and their online discourse, I'd say this show would be the underdog in that particular contest.

Doom Patrol is already an unequivocally weird show and it will only appeal to a subset of audiences. Since the potential for buts in the seats and eyes on the screens is smaller then you really need to move to allow the quality to speak for itself. but instead, it is laborious. The main story takes a significant amount of time to kick off, and because of this, the season as a whole never really finds that hook for the audience to be drawn into.

You can watch the first two episodes of Doom Patrol season 4 on HBO Max starting December 8.
