Season 3 of Netflix's I am a Killer is now available with new sets of episodes. The last season has 6 episodes of 40-45 minutes each. The show features criminals who have committed a real crime in the US and are serving their sentence. The directing team includes Ross Young, Ned Parker, Zoe Hines, James Tovell, Jeremy Truner and Stuart Powell.
The synopsis reads: "This true crime documentary series looks at capital punishment and the personal circumstances that can motivate a person to murder."
Stars: Swaylee Loughnane, Reece Putinas, David Galea
The Netflix show I'm a Murderer Season 3 has six episodes: A Question of Loyalty, Someone Else, History Repeats Itself, Blackout, Roll the Dice, and One Bad Day. In each episode, we meet convicts who tell us about themselves, their backgrounds, and what led them to commit the crime that led to their harsh internment. Some of the inmates serving the punishment are Victoria Smith, Deryl Madison, Daniel Paulsrud, James Walker and David Cameron Keith.
Each episode begins with the prisoner sharing his version first, then the police/investigating officers/lawyers speaking, and then family members or related persons narrating the incidents.
The first episode begins with the creators telling us some amazing facts. The text reads: “Each year in the United States, more than 8,000 people are convicted of murder. Of these, less than 50% confess their crime. After reading the text and watching the episodes and the different versions, the viewer is in a dilemma of what to believe.
When a person commits a crime, he certainly does not want to be caught, and therefore he will never admit to having done something wrong. However, I'm a Murderer Season 3 on Netflix, although the convicted take responsibility for their criminal acts, they blame the past, their mental state or the situation.
An army man, who obviously worked with guns, doesn't admit to shooting his mistress on purpose. He says that he accidentally opened the gun, so the bullet went straight through the chest of her fiancée's and she died. But the police officers and family members have a very disturbing version of how the person treated his partner!
The crime stories are quite chilling and are told to us in a direct way, which is quite intriguing. The directors didn't over-dramatize or sensationalize anything, which has been over-done in a lot of crime documentaries lately. I liked how some chapters end where our doubts about the versions of these inmates grow.
One of the episodes also highlights whether capital punishment is fair for people with intellectual disabilities. Some people commit crimes and do not realize their serious act at the time. So is it fair to give them the death penalty? The argument is highlighted in one of the most disturbing episodes of the series. But the criminal here was also a drug addict. So again it left me feeling uncertain about the killer's confession.
There are several cases of difficult situations where one wonders what is right and what is wrong. But one thing is for sure: not everyone views serious crime through the same lens. That is why there are arguments against capital punishment in many parts of the world.
