The Big Door Prize 2023 Tv Series Review Trailer Cast Crew

The Apple TV+ original series “The Big Door Prize,” a new comedy created by Emmy Award-winning producer David West Read, wrestles with this question. After the first three episodes premiered at the SXSW Film and TV Festival, West Read and stars Chris O'Dowd, Gabrielle Dennis, Josh Segarra, Djouliet Amara, Sammy Fourlas, Ally Maki and Crystal Fox took part in a question and answer session and responses moderated by IndieWire's Ben Travers. .

The 10-episode series, which begins streaming on Apple TV+ on March 29, is based on the M.O. 2021. Walsh's novel of the same name. It is set in the fictional Deerfield, a typical idyllic small town where a high school teacher named Dusty (O'Dowd) lives happily with his wife of over 20 years, Cass (Dennis) and his teenage daughter Trina (O'Dowd). Amara). However, the lives of the people in this close-knit community are changed forever when a mysterious machine with a glowing blue hue appears in the general store. Displaying the name "Morpho" in all capital letters and an illuminated butterfly graphic on the front, the arcade-style machine promises to reveal something called "true life potential" to those who follow its minimal but straightforward instructions.

Stars: Ally Maki, Djouliet Amara, Patrick Kerr

During the panel, Travers asked O'Dowd about Dusty's reaction to the divining device. "I think he's very afraid of change, and he finds out that he's probably had a lot of that in his life, and then all of a sudden he feels calm and happy and everything is normal, and someone throws a grenade," O'Dowd said. . . "The thought that you've reached your potential but there's nowhere else to go is kind of scary, because what are you going to do tomorrow?"

Promising viewers the same heart of the Apple TV+ series “Ted Lasso,” “The Big Door Prize” also targets the same thought-provoking sci-fi variety that drives “Severance.”

When cast members were asked if there are any questions they want people to ask themselves while watching the series, Fox, who plays Deerfield Mayor Izzy, explained that she hopes people will examine whether they are living life with intention or not.

“After we got out of this pandemic, I think everyone understands the importance of your time, what you're doing with your time, what you're doing with your life,” Fox said. “And we're not sure, but we better let us ensure; You've only got one life."

When the cast was asked if the show had made them question his own potential, Segarra joked that he was giving up acting to become a professional wrestler, and O'Dowd said he's sure his mother he still wants me to be a lawyer. However, O'Dowd went along with the joke and became philosophical about how the premise of an oracle giving direction to the directionless affects the townspeople.

"It's kind of fascinating because you can see it on a much broader basis that's going on in the world, where people will embrace an idea and the power of an idea can be very stifling to everyone else," O'Dowd said. "Watching this, I guess it's like a little version of society in a goldfish bowl where it's like, 'OK, let's pitch a little idea and see who bites,' and then you see all these people bite into this thing, and it changes his whole nature. I like the show for that reason: the failures of the true oracle."

On the same topic, Dennis said that he felt a connection to something his character said on the show: he just wants to be happier. “I feel that ultimately, when we are looking for the potential in our life, we are looking for the joy of living,” he added. “It's like, how do we get happier than where we are right now? Because we don't want to be less happy. The goal is just to move forward.”

As Travers says, "The Big Door Prize" features a great ensemble that asks big, tough questions. Creator West Read was tasked with balancing comedy, drama, and philosophy while creating something that's still fun to watch, and the cast was essential to making it all work.

“The way they can achieve this incredible balance between tough, fun and touching your heart, it's just like life,” West Read said. “He is constantly fluctuating between these kinds of moments of joy and these deep moments of pain. It feels a bit inclusive in that kind of human experience, but it's really this cast that is able to pull off all of those complicated twists."
