Montréal Girls 2022 Movie Review Trailer Cast Crew

Montreal Girls is a comedy/drama about a young man from the Middle East, Ramy (Hakim Brahimi), who moves to his uncle's house in Montreal to study medicine at university. This new environment, his cousin and his two friends make him learn some important lessons about life and change the way he feels his passion, poetry.

Ramy, whose mother recently died of cancer, is about to study at the Montreal medical school. He moves in with his uncle and his cousin Tamer (Jade Hassouné), who is a singer in a rock band. Ramy has always had a love for poetry and gets along well with his cousin as they are both very artistic. Tamer invites him to one of her shows, where she meets his friends and associates, the mysterious Yaz (Sana Asad) and the outgoing Desiree (Jasmina Parent). Ramy loves this change, but at the same time he is going through an existential crisis, after the death of his beloved mother. In the end nothing will be the same for Ramy.

Director: Patricia Chica
Writers: Patricia Chica, Kamal John Iskander
Stars: Hakim Brahimi, Jasmina Parent, Sana Asad

The movie starts out a bit shallow and full of clichés, but I have to admit that Ramy's character was deep and very believable. This was a good reason to keep watching. I also think that many viewers must have seen themselves reflected in it. The movie has its flaws regarding the female characters, which were sloppily written. To be honest, I never managed to understand why the title is Montréal Girls, since they don't really get that much screen time and we don't learn enough information about them. There are some scenes or dialogue that feel forced or weird and the performances by the female cast were disappointing.

Even if there are some problems, Montreal Girls is a movie that changes you, motivates you and in the end you feel like a different person. It is aesthetically pleasing to watch, with many emotional moments and makes you see things from another perspective.

In terms of characters, Ramy from the Middle East is heartbroken by the loss of his mother and decided to become a doctor so he can save people's lives. He leaves home and now lives with his uncle, Hani (Manuel Tadros), and his cousin, Tamer, in Montreal to attend college. Even if Ramy made his dream come true, he realizes that maybe medical school is the opposite of what he's passionate about. He spends quality time with Tamer, meets his artistic friends Yaz and Desiree, and begins to rethink his life and poetry as more than just a hobby - we see the protagonist writing many poems throughout the film, but this earns his credit. disapproval of his father.

Tamer is Ramy's wild cousin, who is the lead singer of a rock band. He is light-hearted and fun to be around, while at the same time encouraging Ramy's poetry. Yaz is the promoter for Tamer's band and shows. She is mysterious, seductive, and sexually promiscuous. She has something elusive and Ramy falls for her. Yaz is emotionally unavailable, but at the same time an attention seeker. We later learn that his behavior is a form of revolution against the feminine ideal in his country, since she also hails from the Middle East. Both Tamer and Desiree warn Ramy to lose his feelings for her, as she is a "cheat" and a "player".

Desiree is the photographer for Tamer's gang and has a sexual affair with Yaz. Later, we see her getting tired of Yaz and sharing a few moments with Ramy. She's the girl next door and she has a lot more in common with him. Unfortunately, we don't know anything else about her, and it's obvious that her character is underdeveloped. I think Yaz is also superficially written, but Desiree's performance is a disappointment, especially considering that the movie's title is Montréal Girls.

Hani is Ramy's uncle and is very supportive of his needs after the loss of his mother. Fahim is Ramy's father. He is emotionally distant, as he tries so hard to protect his heart, to the point that he stops supporting his family when he needs it. He is strict and pressures Rami to stop dreaming of becoming a poet. Alya is Ramy's late mother, who was an English teacher and was generally a kind, talented, and giving person. Someone can infer that Ramy took everything from his mother and they shared a very close bond.

My favorite performances were Hakim Brahimi as Ramy and Natalie Tannous as Alya. They saved the movie with their amazing acting skills and chemistry while there are many heartwarming scenes that stay with us after the movie ends. On the other hand, Sana Asad and Jasmina Parent were frustrating as the “Montreal Girls”, Yaz and Desiree respectively. It was hard for me to concentrate on what they were both saying, because their acting was so lame!
