Japanese manga has a long history, emerging in the early 20th century and producing several major works that paved the way for animation since the 1960s. Ultraman is one of those classic manga series that has spawned multiple anime adaptations. Starting in 1967, the manga series produced several anime shows as part of Tsuburaya Productions, which also handled the comics.
Ultraman is a Japanese anime series directed by Kenji Kamiyama that aired for two seasons, the first in 2019 and the second in 2022. The plot revolves around Shin Hayata, who transforms into a suit-wearing superhero and defends Earth from alien beings before disappearing. However, after many years, the invaders returned to Earth and he had to wear the suit once more, only to be severely injured. Shin Hayata leaves his legacy in the hands of his son, Shinjirou Hayata, who was born with the most durable and powerful body of all humans.
Creators: Eiichi Shimizu, Tomohiro Shimoguchi, Eiji Tsuburaya

Before we get into the plot of the third season, let's recap the previous season. Rena and Shinjirou disappear after the global mass disappearance event and wake up inside the Dark Star ship orbiting Earth. Meanwhile, the aliens behind the event, who are also the Dark Star organization, send a message to Earth saying that the people on Earth must choose between giving up half the planet or sacrificing half their population. Although it seems that they had the advantage, things changed when Ultraman (Shinjirou), Seven, Taro, Zoffy, Jack and Ace, the six heroes, united to face the Golden Fortress.
The recent trailer for Ultraman season 3 has given us a glimpse of what we might witness in the upcoming series. Shinjirou, who experienced a nightmare, apparently fails to control his powers and unleashes them, resulting in the demolition of the city and leaving thousands injured. With the aliens aiming to successfully make the scapegoat of Ultraman, society begins to refer to him as a "disaster of humanity" and loses faith in him. Meanwhile, a disturbing threat from the Dark Star has lurked in the shadows.
Given the way the story branches off from the previous one, we can expect to see most of the characters return for the third season and a couple of new characters that will play a vital role. Hayata Shinjirou, the main protagonist of the anime, is voiced by Ryouhei Kimura. Since his debut in the Finding Full Moon anime in 2002, he has continued to work as a voice actor for two decades. He is well known for his roles in Angel Beats as Hinata, Psycho Pass as Kirito Kamui, Tokyo Ravens as Ato Touji, Akame ga Kill as Shura, Overlord as Erya Uzruth, and Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun as Asmodeus.
In an article, Tsuburaya Productions confirmed the addition of two new voice actors for the third season. Koji Ishi will be voicing Mephisto, while MAO will be playing Valkyrie. According to the article, these characters will have a significant presence in the anime as they try to hunt down Shinjirou and the SSSP. While these three characters are the main focus of the third season, here's a look at the supporting voice cast members: Kenjirou Tsuda (Adad), Kaiji Soze (Bemlar), Shigeru Ushiyama (Edo), Hideyuki Tanaka (Shin Hayato), Megumi Han (Seiji Hokuto), Ken Uo (Mitsuhiro Ito), Ryouta Takeuchi (Jack), Takuya Eguchi (Dan Moroboshi), Sumire Morohoshi (Rena Sayama), and Minoru Shiraishi (Shiraishi).
Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama, who directed the second season of the anime, will return to direct the third. In addition to ensuring that Ultraman provides the best possible experience for viewers, these directors have been involved in several notable anime shows. While Aramaki is best known for his work on Harlock: Space Pirate, Appleseed: Ex Machina, Starship Troopers: Invasion, and Soul Eater, Kamiyama is best known for his work on Star Wars: Visions, Ghost in the Shell SAC 2045, Eden of the East and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.
Tomohiro Shimoguchi, who previously designed character designs for the first and second seasons of Ultraman based on the manga by original creators Eiichi Shimizu and Eiji Tsubaraya, is another returning member of the team. Kazuma Jinnouchi, whose previous works include Suzume no Tojimari, Star Wars: Visions, RWBY: Ice Queendom, and Space Bug, composed the music for the third season of Ultraman. Joseph Chou, Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, and Jamie Simone are the anime's producers.
Ultraman season 3, titled "Ultraman Final", will be released on Netflix on May 11, 2023.
