Though Mech Cadets may follow familiar tropes (a determined loser protagonist gifted with extraordinary opportunity, a rival driven by parental pressure), Greg Pak deftly develops well-rounded, likable characters. Each character has depth, and as the story progresses, the stakes rise in exciting and logical ways. The series avoids the cliché of having the protagonist secretly overpowered, and Stanford's abilities and the Robo's abilities of him develop naturally.
Takeshi Miyazawa's art complements the story perfectly. The Robos' designs are simple yet charming, and the color palettes perfectly match them. Miyazawa's diverse and expressive human characters add depth to the narrative. The evolution of the character designs, as seen in the previous iteration of the series called "The Robos", shows Miyazawa's thoughtful approach to creating the right look for each character, both human and Robo.
While the Mech Cadets will make their television debut in August, they'll also return with a sequel to the comic book series of the same name. The volume drops intriguing clues that readers can't wait to see explored in the next series.
