There are five couples in The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On: Antonio and Roxanne (together 4 years, she's not sure she wants to be with a man whose ambition doesn't match hers), Lisa and Brian (together 2 years, he's hoping to be more financially secure before proposing), Ryann and James (together for 7 years, he doesn't believe in the idea of "true love"), Trey and Riah (together for 2 years, she's not sure what she wants in life and isn't ready for anything long term), and Kat and Alex (together 2 years, he says she drives him crazy).
During the first week, all couples will break up (and from now on refer to their partners as their exes) and casually date other members of the opposite sex who are participating in the show. Then they'll pair up with one of them and live together for three more weeks to see what it's like to be "married" to someone else. At the end of the experience, the hope is that they realize that they came to this program with their soul mate or that they have learned that this mate is not for them.
Stars: April Marie, Zay Wilson, Madlyn Ballatori
As couples get to know each other, one of the most interesting aspects is the fact that those who give their partners ultimatums seem to be looking for each other, perhaps because they are all the most sure of their feelings about commitment. When the whole gang gets together after the first day of dating, they try to have a heart-to-heart, albeit very awkward (since their exes are there), discussion about who they're hooking up with. And soon the awkwardness turns to tension when Lisa, who has a crush on her partner Brian, begins to reconsider her participation in the show when she sees him talking to Riah. Lisa, who seemed reasonable enough before, has a complete breakdown and runs off camera.
Going into a show like The Ultimatum, one has to wonder if any of the couples who would agree to be on it are actually happy and healthy together. After all, an ultimatum is basically the last straw, the death sentence for desperate people who need an answer to some burning question. If you criticize the show for that reason, rest assured that the show's producers understand exactly what you're thinking.
It was even scripted, with host Nick Lachey saying: “Psychologists agree that giving an ultimatum isn't exactly a good way to get someone else to do what you want. BUT, it is the best way to get the answers you need.” It's like saying that out loud justifies the entire series by at least acknowledging that the process we're entering is not going to be healthy.
I have to give credit to the casting of this season for making it engaging and addicting. All the contestants are very different and full of complicated layers: On the one hand, you have someone like Lisa, who seemed really in love with her partner Brian, but gets so mad at him for doing what the show requires of him: talk to he. another woman – that she slapped him across the face when he was around.
On the other, you have Roxanne, who I found very annoying because she constantly used the word "hurry" as a noun and repeatedly stated that ambition is the most important thing in life. However, when Lisa begins to freak out in the final moments of the show, it was Roxanne who tried to calm her down, even telling her "Don't be mean", when Lisa called Riah "a Hooters bitch". (Too late, meanness has already been released into the ether!) During episode two, Roxanne tells the group, after they've all witnessed Lisa's meltdown, "Honestly, it's all going to get weirder," and all of you , that's a promise. that show goes on.
