Love at First Sight 2023 Movie Review Trailer

Describing a streaming original as a product tailored to the preferences of an algorithm may seem cliché, but “Love at First Sight,” now available on Netflix, takes this concept to a whole new level. Not only does this film feel unapologetically formulaic, but it also builds its entire narrative around cold calculations of data, thus exploring the intriguing intersection between romance and statistics.

Like “500 Days of Summer,” the film that serves as the basis for this latest creation, “Love at First Sight” presents us with a narrator who becomes obsessed with numerical details. A notable example of this fixation occurs early on when the film introduces its two central characters, Hadley (played by Haley Lu Richardson) and Oliver (played by Ben Hardy). Instead of delving into their personalities or quirks, the film overwhelms us with a pedantic voiceover detailing their heights, ages, and even the average charge left on their cell phones.

Based on the young adult novel “The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight,” the film takes place over 24 hours and follows the journey of these two students as they travel to London for important family events. Hadley and Oliver's fateful meeting occurs in a classic "meet-cute" moment at Kennedy International Airport, followed by a shared nap in adjacent business class seats and a near-kiss moment in the bathroom line. Jameela Jamil, who perhaps embodies the couple's cosmic stroke of luck, serves as narrator and appears periodically in various supporting roles throughout the story.

Director Vanessa Caswill really picks up the pace once the lovebirds land in London. Here, the obsession with statistics takes a backseat, allowing the cast, especially Haley Lu Richardson and Sally Phillips (who plays Oliver's ailing mother), to shine with genuine emotion. The transformation is remarkable: how could a premise as boring as this manage to become a solid romantic drama? Jameela Jamil's character might have the answer, given her unique connection to the events unfolding in the story.
