Sex Education Season 4 Tv Series 2023 Review Trailer

September is the time to say goodbye to teenagers and begin new chapters in their wonderfully energetic lives. The powers that be decided not to offer us any respite in this sad process and dropped the departure of Otis, Eric, Maeve, Aimee, Adam and the rest of the Moordale gang into the emotional mix of the fourth and final series of Sex Education.

It's not like they're the Moordale gang anymore. The old school site has been sold to developers and we join them as Maeve (Emma Mackey) starts her writing course at Wallace University in the US, Adam (Connor Swindells) starts a new job at a local stable and Otis (Asa Butterfield), Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) and Aimee (Aimee Lou Wood) take their A levels and their angst to Cavendish College. This is an impeccably woke and safe student-run space, which is nice for the students, but less rewarding for viewers because it transforms the series into what feels like one big box-ticking enterprise.

Creator: Laurie Nunn
Stars: Asa Butterfield, Emma Mackey, Alistair Petrie

What used to set Sex Education apart from the crowd was the authenticity at its core. He captured the joy that young people bring to sex, relationships, and everything in between, and handled their fears with the same care, style, and insight. But their personal entanglements were what mattered most, and the stories, from the bullying-turned-tenderness between Eric and Adam to the bumpy road to attraction followed by Isaac (George Robinson) and Maeve, bonded by the damage of their childhood , emerged from carefully constructed characters. .

This time almost the opposite happens. In Cavendish, we are introduced to a group of newcomers who never amount to much more than symbols of the categories they have apparently been deemed essential to include. Aisha (Alexandra James) is deaf and doesn't have much to do other than remind people to let her see their mouths when they speak, and then join Isaac in a clumsy speech about disability rights. There is representation of gender identity through Abbi and Roman, with the latter seemingly there solely to offer Cal (Dua Saleh) a view of someone further down the transition path and inform viewers about the length of waiting lists and costs of private surgery. If Sex Education stayed true to its early, much more radical roots, it might do more than simply hint at the possible downsides of relentless positivity, but here the rule remains just an absolute statement. Asexuality also gets a shout-out, and in the US, Ellen (Marie Reuther), a fellow student on Maeve's course, is simply a set of privileges that Maeve doesn't have.

The overstuffed cast means that everything and everyone is underdeveloped. From Jackson worrying about what it means he enjoyed having a girlfriend finger his butt to the many crushing blows Maeve took, nothing has room to breathe. That includes characters we previously cared about. Cal's story is pushed aside until it's suddenly needed for a dramatic ending, Maeve and Otis circle each other endlessly and pointlessly, Aimee often falls into caricature - the list of frustrations goes on. And when it comes to the silly business surrounding Eric's journey toward accommodation with his God and his church, he only succeeds thanks to Gatwa's extraordinary talent and charisma.

That's before you add everything going on in the adult world. Jean (Gillian Anderson) has postpartum depression, her maddening sister Joanna (Lisa McGrillis) is left behind, and they have a lot of joint childhood trauma to work through. Adam's father, Michael (Alistair Petrie), tries to be a better man and have sex with someone who is not his ex-wife. Dan Levy plays Maeve's college tutor and is woefully underused in what could have been a great turn as a bitter man who tries to crush the dreams of her promising students.

He also brings down the mood that everyone, and not just rival sex therapist O (Thaddea Graham), who is already installed in Cavendish, uses therapeutic language at all times. Sex Education scripts tended to be fleeting and funny. Everyone is serious now, offering life lessons at every turn and making you long for the days when humor was still an honored part of the human condition.

The final series has its moments, mainly when he returns to the main cast and regains the trust to allow them to do their still glorious alchemical work together. The rest is hard and the goodbye is less painful than it should have been.
