Aberrance is a Mongolian psychological thriller from director Baatar Batsukh. Erkhmee and Selenge have retreated to a vacation home deep in the desert, eager to escape their city lives. Erkhmee seems determined to provide some peace and quiet for Selenge, but this seems at odds with the increasingly violent events her neighbor is witnessing. But who can we trust? Who is the real danger hiding among the snow and trees surrounding this isolated vacation home?
The answer to this question remains elusive throughout the film, until the final act. Aberrance is a winding film that takes the viewer through many possible plots. Could Erkhmee be an abusive husband? Does Selenge suffer from disturbing symptoms that make her a danger to herself and others? What about her neighbor, who seems determined to insert himself into the events happening next door? Throughout the movie, we keep guessing what is happening. It's a reminder that things are not always as they seem and we are left guessing about the complex relationships that develop on screen. Batsukh has commented on the intentional nature of this confusion, using the characters' ever-changing perceptions as a metaphor for the way we all approach our lives, often choosing not to see or investigate what is presented to us.

This is a film with a small cast and a single location. I personally love movies like this as it allows us to delve deeper into the story and see how the characters develop. The acting is great and the location is stunning, leading to a claustrophobic thriller that never lets up. The final revelation when it arrives is appropriately nihilistic, in line with Batsukh's goal of shedding light on the ills of the world and the ways in which we become complicit.
Aberrance is a twisted thriller that is sure to keep viewers guessing. Although it is possible to criticize that the plot may have too many twists, leading to some plot holes and an ending that could feel out of place with the rest of the film. This is a relatively short feature, so there was room to expand on some of the threads. Despite this, Batsukh clearly has a great eye for images and as a result, this is a beautiful film. It's also inspiring to see a film so well made and on a limited budget, and Batsukh has mentioned that he hoped to inspire others to see that you can still create art, even if you don't have access to the latest technology. -art team. There is also a clear sociopolitical message in the film, one that encourages viewers to criticize and reject corrupt systems that value profits over life and allow evil to flourish.
