The Kill Room 2023 Movie Review Trailer

The Kill Room is a crime satire set in the modern art world. Aimed at an audience that may not agree with the jokes, director Nicol Paone wisely fills her canvas with the witty Samuel L. Jackson, the sexy Uma Thurman, and the chiseled Joe Manganiello. Although it depends on stories seen before, The Kill Room is an entertaining enough piece that it deserves a 98-minute watch in any movie gallery.

Samuel L. Jackson plays Gordon, an intermediary for the killer Reggie (Manganiello), whose preferred method is strangulation and his preferred tool is a plastic bag. Since plastic bags are banned in certain states, including New York, where this story takes place, the metaphor of using a deadly weapon is not lost. Reggie has a high success rate, leading Gordon's boss to look for a new avenue to launder money. A chance meeting between Gordon and cash-strapped art gallery owner Patrice (Thurman) turns out to be fortuitous for both of them.

Director: Nicol Paone
Writer: Jonathan Jacobson
Stars: Samuel L. Jackson, Maya Hawke, Uma Thurman

Scripted by Jonathan Jacobson, The Kill Room is fun crime fiction wrapped in a comedic body bag as Reggie's murders eventually transform into avant-garde art. Reggie becomes known as the Bagman whose art naturally becomes more successful than the laundry business. The Kill Room then dives into a slight robbery case, as the plot follows Woody Allen's Small Time Crooks, which also features an undercover deal that becomes more of a hit than the actual crime. Just as life imitates art, art also imitates art.

Paone balances Reggie's realistic violence with art-world parodies in a lighter way than the inaccessible and poorly executed Velvet Buzzsaw. However, for a film set in a creative environment, the presentation is nothing striking. The film is flat and sparse, with only the quasi-Pulp Fiction reunion of Jackson and Thurman to break the empty monotony. Manganiello's dark eyes speculate as the cast of art snobs (including Thurman's daughter, Maya Hawke) swoon over indecipherable minutiae. Everything is pleasant but so momentary and forgettable.

The Kill Room, like the art satirized within it, has clever subtext but lacks that deep impression. The film successfully captures the transitory nature of artistic styles, highlighting an allegory of films as they exist on modern streaming services. The Kill Room itself may not put on a show-stopping spectacle like the Bagman, but when paired with the right wine and cheese, it could end a Friday night well.
