“Griselda” unfolds as a revenge story, chronicling the real-life rise of Griselda Blanco, portrayed with captivating intensity by Sofía Vergara, to the status of The Godmother of the Medellín Cartel.
Instead of depicting a victimized figure dragged into the underworld, creator Eric Newman offers a glimpse into the meticulous and intelligent mind of a woman determined to recover everything that was stolen from her, even at the cost of self-destruction. The show, characterized by its fast pace and compelling performances, offers a brutal, fascinating and dramatic narrative that begins with a daring escape.
Creators: Carlo Bernard, Ingrid Escajeda, Doug Miro
Stars: Sofía Vergara, Alberto Guerra, Juliana Aidén Martinez
Directed by the team behind “Narcos,” the limited series begins in the late 1970s in Medellín, Colombia, when an injured Griselda seeks refuge in her meticulously curated home. The narrative takes a frenetic turn when she contacts a friend of hers, Carmen, packs her bags and moves with her children to Miami, leaving behind unresolved issues in Medellín. Arriving in 1978 Miami, Griselda harnesses the city's frenetic energy and showcases her knack for reinvention.
The series features Griselda in the middle of her life, and the audience witnesses her mastery of reinventing herself. Despite the narrow living conditions in Carmen's house, Griselda, determined to rebuild her life, overcomes the challenges of drug trafficking, facing misogyny, machismo, violence and intimidation. Sofía Vergara, also an executive producer, undergoes a notable transformation, evolving from a comic environment to portray an increasingly agitated and vicious woman, with prosthetics and 1970s fashion.
Although it compresses three years into six-hour episodes, “Griselda” maintains an impeccable pace, without skimping on moments or dialogues. The series meticulously chronicles Griselda's rise, and in episode 5, “Paradise Lost,” set in 1981, it reveals her once-savior's transformation into a Scarface-like monster fueled by crack and cocaine in a luxurious castle. The narrative delves into the consequences of power and greed on the human spirit, portrayed through a chaotic and disturbing episode reminiscent of soap opera tropes.
The all-star cast, including Vergara, shines in capturing the essence of ambition and retaliation. Particularly noteworthy is Martín Rodríguez's portrayal of Jorge “Rivi” Ayala-Rivera, a Miami heavy hitter, who offers a fascinating depiction of a criminal mastermind. Despite small errors, such as Griselda's hand gesture potentially on her nose and a strange slow-motion scene, “Griselda” excels in portraying a woman who transforms from prey to predator. While not aspirational, the series explores the complexities of taking control of one's narrative, recognizing the survival instincts and ego-driven actions that shape human behavior.
