 Conspiracy theories pose multifaceted dangers, as exemplified by “American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders,” a Netflix true-crime documentary series produced by Mark and Jay Duplass (“Wild Wild Country”). Spanning four fascinating parts, the series not only delves into what its central figure considered “the political conspiracy of the century,” but also serves as a warning about the dangers of descending into the labyrinth of conspiratorial thinking.

 Luring viewers with promises of revealing truths, it navigates through a labyrinth of controversial facts, dubious speculation and frantic fantasies, reflecting the very content it investigates.

“American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders,” out February 28, chronicles the mysterious disappearance of Danny Casolaro, a writer discovered dead in the bathtub of a Sheraton hotel in Martinsburg, West Virginia, on August 10, 1991. Yes Although authorities quickly labeled it a suicide, those close to Casolaro suspected a crime had been committed, given his participation in a groundbreaking investigation called “the Octopus,” a labyrinthine conspiracy involving software engineers, criminals, intelligence agencies. and high-ranking government officials.

 Casolaro's search began with the discovery of INSLAW, a company behind the revolutionary PROMIS system, which ultimately led him down a treacherous path fraught with intrigue and danger.


The series follows Christian Hansen, a figure captivated by the death of Casolaro and the enigmatic conspiracy he supposedly unraveled. Despite initial reservations, director Zachary Treitz joins Hansen in his search for the truth, documenting his descent into Casolaro's labyrinthine hypotheses. 

What unfolds is a complex narrative involving a network of agents, shady deals, and covert operations, all connected to the Cabazon reservation in California. As Hansen immerses himself in the world of Casolaro, the lines between truth and speculation blur, culminating in a revelation that challenges his understanding of reality itself.


“American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders” offers a gripping exploration of the appeal and dangers of conspiracy theories.
