Suncoast 2024 Movie Review Trailer

Debuting at Sundance 2024 but evoking a cinematic atmosphere reminiscent of festivals from decades past, “Suncoast” presents itself as a cheerful Searchlight-style crowd-pleaser that relies heavily on charm to compensate for its lack of originality. While this approach may be sufficient for a lighter film, films in this genre generally require a deeper emotional resonance, something first-time writer-director Laura Chinn strives to achieve.

The film weaves a familiar tapestry of dynamics commonly found in independent Searchlight films. We follow the coming-of-age journey of Doris (played by Nico Parker, daughter of Thandiwe Newton), as she struggles to come out of the shadows and assert herself at school.

Director: Laura Chinn
Writer: Laura Chinn
Stars: Nico Parker, Laura Linney, Woody Harrelson

At the same time, Doris deals with family discord, particularly her strained relationship with her mother (played by Laura Linney), who is preoccupied with caring for her terminally ill son. Adding a slightly strange element to the mix, Doris forms an unlikely bond with a grieving husband (Woody Harrelson) protesting outside her brother's hospice.

Loosely inspired by Chinn's own teenage experiences in the mid-2000s, “Suncoast” feels more influenced by the seriously crafted comedy-dramas of that era than by the reality of the time. While Linney gives a characteristically strong performance, her portrayal of a working-class Floridian seems somewhat incongruous, as does Parker's portrayal of a girl from the wrong side of the tracks. Despite her efforts, the authenticity of her characters is undermined by a sense of artifice.

Harrelson's presence adds little to the narrative and serves primarily to bolster the film's star power. None of the stories manage to break free from the constraints of familiarity, and the high school drama feels particularly lackluster and generic. However, the conflict between mother and daughter offers flashes of emotional depth, although marred by occasional moments of melodrama.

Ultimately, “Suncoast” fails to leave a lasting impression and settles for pleasant mediocrity. While it may entertain in the moment, it fails to resonate beyond its runtime and lacks the emotional resonance needed to make a lasting impact.
