Wars are mostly perceived as morally unambiguous. The Russians are the bad guys, the Ukrainians are the good guys. Before that, the communists were bad and the West was good. And before that, the Germans were the villains and the resistance fighters were the heroes.
In reality, it is not always clear. Who is bad and who is good is sometimes the result of mere circumstances. To meet certain people, to do certain jobs. This is what the flamenco film 'Wil' is about. It shows how in Antwerp, during World War II, some people helped the Germans and resistance fighters at the same time. Not because they couldn't decide what was morally wrong or right, but because circumstances forced them to do so and because deep down they preferred to stay out of it.

Wil, the main character, is a low-ranking police officer in Antwerp who becomes involved in an incident with a German officer. He can cost you your life. Most of the film shows how he tries to cope with this fact and how the people around him make various decisions, thus influencing his own destiny. The ending of the film is very dramatic and illustrates how making moral decisions is different from not making them. Deciding not to sit on the sidelines can have an extreme impact.
The film is beautifully shot in dark, somber colors, accentuating the hardships of the war years. The performances are top-notch, which should come as no surprise as the cast is made up of some of the best flamenco actors. This is a different type of war film, which inevitably makes each viewer wonder what choices he would have made. And there are no easy answers to that question.
