“Diarra from Detroit” is a witty and engaging mystery comedy-drama featuring a witty and irreverent detective who will have you laughing one moment and on the edge of your seat the next.

Diarra, played by Diarra Kilpatrick, who is also the creator of the series, is a school teacher who returns to her Detroit neighborhood in the midst of a divorce. Still dealing with her emotions over her ex (played by Morris Chestnut), it's unclear if she's deeply embarrassed or truly heartbroken. Seeking a distraction from her failed marriage, Diarra reluctantly ventures into the world of online dating through Tinder, only to be cheated on by her first partner. Or so she thinks.


Convinced that her missing suitor had genuine interest and plans for a second date, Diarra refuses to accept her sudden absence. While her friends downplay her optimism, Diarra's detective instincts kick in when she discovers a man tied up in her date's apartment.


Diarra's combination of street smarts, intellect, and naivety makes her a compelling character worth rooting for. Kilpatrick skillfully portrays the range of her emotions, from late-night introspection to handling rowdy students and even navigating dangerous situations with a childhood friend.


While some scenes may lean toward broad humor and perpetuate stereotypes, and Diarra's social circle comprises familiar archetypes, Kilpatrick's portrayal of the title character as an "extra" makes the series a must-see.
