Before that, she learned that it was her father who leaked the news of her abortion, so she went to see him in prison. She was fed up with Keith's psychopathic tendencies and no longer wanted to waste time trying to figure out his motives and intentions. Melissa and Ivy breathed a sigh of relief after finding the murder weapon, believing they could soon close the case and prove Elijah's innocence. But they had no idea it wouldn't be an easy road. Melissa returned home after finding the wrench and felt strangely unsafe, something she'd never experienced before. She felt like she'd missed out on so much, completely unaware of what was going on in her children's lives. Spermworld 2024 Movie Review Trailer

Chilean filmmaker Cristóbal Valenzuela Berríos first encountered the True/False Film Festival, famous for its spring celebration of documentaries, while attending a festival in Japan a few years ago.

He vividly remembers seeing filmmakers wearing hats emblazoned with the festival's logo, which piqued his curiosity about an event dedicated exclusively to nonfiction cinema, albeit on the other side of the world, in Columbia, Missouri. Witnessing such fervent dedication gave True/False an almost mythical status in his mind, placing it at the top of his list of festivals to attend.

Director: Lance Oppenheim
Writers: Daniel Garber, Lance Oppenheim

This year, Valenzuela Berríos finally made the trip to the picturesque university town with an insatiable appetite for real-life stories. There, he presented his latest offbeat documentary, “Alien Island,” which explores a famous UFO incident in Chile with an intriguing link to the Pinochet dictatorship.

Reflecting on the festival, he said: “Filmmakers who had stopped by seemed enchanted by the mystique of the festival. “I always wanted to come and see why people were so delighted.”

Driven by his desire to attend, Valenzuela Berríos defied the concerns of his producers and traveled from Santiago for a brief visit, despite being absorbed in the production of his third feature film at home. But what makes True/False so extraordinary?

Since its inception in 2004, the Ragtag Film Society has fostered a devoted local audience, from retired film buffs to curious students, who pack every screening during the four-day documentary extravaganza. Whether a thought-provoking piece from Madagascar or an emotionally resonant Norwegian production, True/False captivates with its diverse programming.

The festival exudes a sense of community pride, with its close-knit atmosphere and convenient layout, where all theaters and venues are within walking distance of the city center. Despite its local roots, True/False has a global reach, attracting filmmakers and press from around the world.

Director Lance Oppenheim's first encounter with True/False left a lasting impression, particularly the whimsical March Carnival procession, where the community gathers in colorful attire to celebrate documentary films.

Upon returning to True/False for the world premiere of his latest film, “Spermworld,” Oppenheim welcomed the opportunity to showcase his work to a large audience, fostering meaningful discussion and reflection.

Oppenheim values True/False for its exclusive focus on nonfiction works, allowing each film's unique narrative style to shine. Unlike festivals where documentaries often compete with fiction films, True/False offers a dedicated space for non-fiction storytelling to flourish.

Similarly, Valenzuela Berríos believes that True/False's documentary-focused niche offers a platform for filmmakers to connect and share their diverse voices, away from the overshadowing presence of fiction films.

For first-time director Rachel Elizabeth Seed, True/False provided the perfect platform for the world premiere of her deeply personal documentary, “A Photographic Memory,” which drew a standing ovation from a captivated audience.

The festival's eclectic curation ensures audiences enjoy a wide range of non-fiction storytelling, from heartfelt narratives to thought-provoking social commentary, creating an immersive experience that transcends traditional notions of documentary filmmaking.

Indeed, True/False offers a vibrant tapestry of nonfiction storytelling, reflecting the diverse spectrum of human experiences and perspectives, making it a must-attend event for filmmakers and audiences alike.
